SO CALCULATED, SO DEMONIC”: FORMER NEWS ANCHOR SENTENCED TO LIFE AFTER KILLING HER OWN MOTHER
A former television news anchor broke down in court Monday as a judge sentenced her to life in prison for the killing of her 80-year-old mother — a case her own family described as one of the most devastating things they had ever experienced.

Angelynn Mock, 48, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of her mother, Anita Avers. She was sentenced in Wichita, Kansas, after admitting to killing Avers on Halloween 2025. Under Kansas law, Mock will be eligible for parole after serving 25 years.
The case shocked Avers’ family because of the circumstances surrounding her death.
Police found Anita stabbed multiple times in her bed. Investigators also discovered knives and a cheese grater near her body. According to Court TV, Anita was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.
But the tragedy became even more difficult for the family when they learned that the person responsible was Anita’s own daughter.
During Monday’s sentencing hearing, relatives delivered emotional victim-impact statements. One of Anita’s stepdaughters described the killing as an ambush, saying her mother had been in bed and was attacked while she was asleep.
She called what happened “so devastating, so calculated, so demonic.”
Mock had previously given investigators a very different account.

According to police, she claimed she had been defending herself after her mother allegedly attacked her with a knife. Mock told investigators that Anita had been sharpening knives in bed and that she fought back before grabbing a knife herself.
But prosecutors ultimately charged her with first-degree murder, and Mock eventually pleaded guilty rather than taking the case to trial.
The circumstances surrounding Mock’s life before the killing also drew attention. She had previously worked as a news anchor in St. Louis. Her stepfather reportedly told investigators that she had lost her job following what he described as an “explosive situation involving alcohol.”
In court, Mock listened as members of her family described the devastating impact Anita’s death had left behind. Her granddaughter said Mock should “never see daylight again,” while another family member said Anita had been the person who loved her daughter unconditionally and had always been there for her.
Mock cried throughout the hearing but chose not to make a statement to the court.
When the judge informed her of her right to appeal, Mock made one final decision: she said she did not want to appeal her conviction.
Now, after nearly a year of questions surrounding what happened inside Anita’s home that Halloween night, Mock knows exactly what her future looks like — decades behind bars before she can even seek parole.
What really happened between mother and daughter that night? Why did Mock claim she was acting in self-defense — and what ultimately led her to plead guilty to the killing?
