Father Executed in Belarus After Torturing His 3-Year-Old Son to Death

A Belarusian father convicted of torturing his three-year-old son to death has been executed, bringing a secretive case of horrific child abuse to a grim conclusion.

Alexander Taratuta, 49, was sentenced to death after he and his wife, Anastasia Taratuta, 40, were convicted in 2023 of the killing of their young son, Semyon.

According to reports, Taratuta was secretly executed in Belarus, the only country in Europe that still carries out the death penalty. Andrei Paluda, coordinator of the Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus, revealed that the execution had taken place around two years after the original crime. Belarusian authorities do not officially announce when death sentences are carried out.

The case shocked the public because of the condition in which the child was found.

Semyon weighed only about 15 pounds when he died. A paramedic who saw the boy described him as extremely thin, saying he appeared almost like “a skeleton covered in skin.”

The court heard that the child had been subjected to prolonged physical abuse and severe neglect inside the family home in Slutsk, about 65 miles south of Minsk.

He was reportedly deprived of food, forced to sleep on bare flooring and exposed to cold conditions. Prosecutors also said the boy was repeatedly beaten and humiliated.

His mother was accused of punching him, throwing him against walls and using objects to punish him when he soiled the floor. At times, the child was allegedly restrained while his parents taunted him with food.

The abuse ultimately ended in a fatal assault in January 2023.

According to the court proceedings, Alexander kicked his son in the head while attempting to make the child sit on the floor. Semyon fell and stopped showing signs of life.

A paramedic later reported severe injuries to the child’s head and face.

Belarusian prosecutors said the parents’ actions were driven by “personal hostility” toward their son and that they intended to kill him.

Yet the family’s treatment of Semyon reportedly stood in stark contrast to how they treated their other children. Investigators said the couple appeared to lavish attention on their older daughter and youngest child while Semyon was subjected to abuse and deprivation.

After the boy’s death, his mother reportedly went to a store and bought candy for the couple’s other children.

Alexander denied that he intended to kill his son. In his final statement to the court, he said he had not wanted his life to end this way and claimed he had not intended to cause his child’s death. He said he regretted that his final blow had been too strong.

The Supreme Court of Belarus upheld his death sentence in January 2024. No pardon was granted.

His wife, Anastasia, was sentenced to 25 years in prison. She was not sentenced to death because Belarus does not impose capital punishment on women.

The execution also highlights Belarus’ continued use of the death penalty. The country remains the only European nation that carries out executions, despite widespread international opposition to capital punishment.

For Semyon’s case, however, the most disturbing part is not the final punishment handed down to his father, but the suffering the three-year-old endured before his death.

A child who should have been protected inside his own home instead became the victim of prolonged violence and neglect — and his death ultimately led to one of Belarus’ most severe criminal sentences.
