Two Neighbors Drag Dead Man Through Apartment Lobby and Prop Him Up Beside Elevator, Police Say
A disturbing scene inside an Iowa apartment building raised immediate questions after surveillance footage allegedly showed two residents moving a dead man’s body through the lobby. But investigators later uncovered a crucial detail: the man’s death was determined to be from natural causes.

A Chilling Scene Caught on Camera
What happened inside an apartment building in Sioux City, Iowa, on September 19, 2026, left investigators with an unusual case to unravel.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by local NBC affiliate KTIV, Victoria Norton, 62, and her neighbor Abel Rivas, 65, were captured on surveillance cameras allegedly moving the body of a deceased man out of Norton’s apartment at around 5 p.m.
Rather than immediately explaining the situation to authorities, the pair allegedly moved the body through the building and propped the man up in a chair near the elevators.
The unsettling discovery prompted questions about why the two neighbors had handled the body in that way and what they knew about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
A 911 Call—and Questions for Investigators
Norton reportedly called 911. When first responders arrived, however, investigators said she did not initially provide an accurate account of what had happened.
Rivas reportedly did not offer first responders information about the incident.
Authorities later determined that the man had died of natural causes. After being informed of that finding, Norton reportedly acknowledged that the man had died inside her apartment.
Officials have not publicly identified the deceased man or disclosed his relationship to Norton. The available report also does not explain why the two neighbors allegedly moved his body into the lobby instead of leaving it where he had died and immediately informing emergency personnel.
Both Neighbors Plead Guilty
The case took a legal turn on October 6, when Norton and Rivas were charged with misdemeanor offenses involving prohibited actions relating to cremation.
Both pleaded guilty the same day, according to Law&Crime. They were ordered to pay $250 in fines and court costs, along with an additional crime services surcharge of 15%.
Neither person was charged in connection with the man’s death, and neither spent time in jail in connection with the case, the report said.
The Mystery That Remains
Although investigators determined that the man died of natural causes, several details remain undisclosed, including his identity, his relationship with Norton, and the reason the pair allegedly moved his body through the apartment building.
The case serves as a reminder that an unusual scene does not necessarily mean a death was caused by a crime. In this instance, authorities determined that the man died naturally, while the two neighbors faced misdemeanor charges over their handling of the body.
