87-Year-Old Civil Rights Activist Says She Was Brutally Beaten After Trying to Help a Young Man Find School Clothes
An 87-year-old woman who spent years helping others in her community is now recovering from a violent attack that left her seriously injured inside her own home. Dr. Ellena Gooch-Reid, a Tennessee civil rights activist and minister, says she had recently helped a young person obtain clothes for school when she was allegedly attacked during a home invasion. Police say two suspects are now wanted in connection with the case, which includes allegations of attempted murder, robbery and abuse of an elderly person.

The attack occurred on the morning of September 9, 2026, at Gooch-Reid’s home on Eastland Avenue in Ripley, Tennessee. According to investigators, a man entered her residence, assaulted her and stole several personal belongings. Gooch-Reid later recalled being struck repeatedly in the head with a fist and an open hand. She was discovered hours afterward lying on the floor in a pool of her own blood, leaving friends and community members deeply concerned about her condition.
The injuries she sustained were severe. In an interview with WMC, a local NBC affiliate, Gooch-Reid said she had suffered nine wounds to her head, chest and arms. A police report also indicated that she had fractures in her right hand and left arm. The 87-year-old has reportedly been in and out of the hospital since the attack, and although she is recovering, the physical and emotional effects have continued to weigh on her.
Gooch-Reid believes the attack may have been connected to her efforts to help a young person find clothes for school. Supporting young people is something she has done as part of her commitment to the community. She told reporters that she had assisted someone shortly before the break-in and believed that person might have been involved. However, police have not confirmed whether the individual she helped was connected to the alleged crime, and the precise circumstances leading up to the attack remain under investigation.
On October 13, Ripley Police Chief Mitchell Turner announced that arrest warrants had been issued for Kevin Harper Jr. and an unnamed juvenile. According to police, both face multiple felony charges, including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, especially aggravated burglary, especially aggravated robbery and aggravated abuse of an elderly person. They also face allegations involving financial exploitation of an elderly person and theft. As of October 14, neither suspect had been arrested, according to Law&Crime.
Beyond the disturbing details of the alleged assault, the case has drawn attention because of Gooch-Reid’s longstanding commitment to civil rights and community service. She previously stood alongside the late U.S. Representative John Lewis, a prominent figure in the American civil rights movement. Even in her later years, she continued to support people around her, including young individuals who needed assistance. The attack has left those familiar with her work confronting the painful possibility that an act of kindness may have placed her in danger.
As she continues to recover, Gooch-Reid has spoken candidly about the psychological toll of the experience. She told WMC that she has been reliving the attack through nightmares, making the road to recovery difficult even as her physical injuries begin to heal. Authorities continue to pursue the suspects while the case develops. For a woman who devoted much of her life to standing up for others, the incident is a deeply troubling reminder of the vulnerability older people can face—even in the place where they should feel safest: their own homes.
