Horror at German Care Home: Woman, 86, Killed and Two Others Seriously Injured in Knife Attack by Fellow Resident
An elderly care home in western Germany has been left reeling after a knife attack claimed the life of an 86-year-old woman and left two other residents seriously injured. The horrifying incident unfolded on Friday evening at the St. Vitus-Stift care home in Olfen, near Dortmund, transforming a facility intended to provide safety and support for vulnerable older people into the scene of a major police investigation.

Police and emergency crews were called to the care home shortly after 7 p.m. following reports of a violent incident. According to authorities, three women aged 86, 81 and 83 were injured in the attack. The oldest victim suffered severe stab wounds and died at the scene, despite the emergency response. The other two women were rushed for medical treatment, with one initially reported to be in a life-threatening condition.
Investigators believe the alleged attacker was a 72-year-old man who also lived at the care facility. German media reported that the violence took place in or near the home’s cafeteria, where residents would ordinarily gather to eat and spend time together. The precise sequence of events remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet established what led to the attack.
The emergency response was extensive. Police officers and firefighters arrived at the scene, while two rescue helicopters landed in the grounds of the facility to assist with the medical evacuation. One of the injured women was airlifted to the University Hospital in Münster for urgent treatment. Medical teams worked to ensure the other casualty also received immediate care as officers secured the building and began examining the circumstances surrounding the violence.

Police later located the 72-year-old suspect in his room at the care home and arrested him without resistance, according to reports. Authorities said there was no longer an immediate danger to the public. A homicide investigation has been launched to establish the motive, reconstruct the events leading up to the attack and determine exactly how the violence unfolded.
The tragedy has raised painful questions about safety inside residential care facilities, where many residents depend on others for daily assistance and may have limited ability to protect themselves during an emergency. St. Vitus-Stift reportedly accommodates 77 elderly people who require care because of a range of health-related needs. The wider complex also includes 36 assisted-living apartments and group accommodation for older people living with dementia.
As investigators continue their work, the focus remains on the three women affected by the attack and the unanswered questions surrounding the alleged perpetrator’s actions. The 86-year-old victim’s death has turned an already frightening incident into a devastating loss for those who knew her, while the two surviving women face serious medical challenges. Authorities have yet to publicly establish a motive, and further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
