Emergency services were called to a residence in Grafton, in New South Wales’ Northern Rivers region, at approximately 6:40 a.m. on Monday, October 12, after a report that the young child was unresponsive. Police officers began performing CPR before paramedics arrived and continued efforts to save him. Despite their attempts, the boy could not be revived.
The case took a disturbing turn as investigators examined reports that the child, who was understood to have developmental difficulties, and at least one of his siblings had allegedly been restrained inside sleeping bags using duct tape at bedtime. Authorities are investigating what happened in the home and whether the reported practice was connected to the boy’s death. The full circumstances have not yet been established.
The boy’s parents have been questioned by police, but as of the latest reports, neither had been arrested. Investigators have also confirmed that the family had previously come to the attention of New South Wales’ Department of Communities and Justice. The department is now working with police as they seek to establish what happened before the child’s death and whether any earlier concerns are relevant to the investigation.

Specialist officers have conducted a forensic examination of the home, while a post-mortem examination is expected to help determine the cause of death. Police have formed a dedicated investigative team known as Strike Force Milona, with detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad assisting with the case. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and establish a clearer timeline of events.
The death has renewed attention on the safety and protection of vulnerable children, particularly those who may need additional support because of developmental difficulties. However, many important questions remain unanswered, and authorities have not yet publicly established the cause of death or announced any charges. The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations surrounding the family must be distinguished from facts that have been formally confirmed.
A spokesperson for the Department of Communities and Justice expressed condolences to those who knew and loved the child and confirmed that the department was assisting police. Investigators have urged anyone with information relevant to the case to contact Crime Stoppers.
