Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Dad Bod” Sparks Debate About Belly Fat and How to Reduce It

Recent beach photos of Leonardo DiCaprio have reignited the conversation around the so-called “dad bod.” But beyond the online chatter about the actor’s appearance, health experts say the discussion offers an opportunity to understand the potential risks of carrying excess fat around the midsection.

Although a person’s appearance alone cannot determine their health, excess abdominal fat — particularly visceral fat, which accumulates deep inside the abdomen around vital organs — has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other health problems.

Why Belly Fat Can Be a Health Concern

Visceral fat differs from the fat stored just beneath the skin. Because it surrounds internal organs, excessive amounts can contribute to metabolic and cardiovascular health risks.

According to health experts, a growing waistline can be one indicator that a person may be carrying too much abdominal fat. For men, a waist circumference exceeding 40 inches is associated with a higher risk of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

However, body shape alone does not provide a complete picture of someone’s health. Factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, physical activity and overall lifestyle also matter.

What Can Contribute to a “Dad Bod”?

New York City personal trainer Marfred Suazo, known as Fonz the Trainer, explained that changes in daily habits can contribute to weight gain around the waist.

Reduced physical activity, fewer daily steps and consuming more calories than the body uses can gradually lead to an increase in body fat. Losing muscle mass may also change the way a person’s body looks and feels.

Busy schedules and inconsistent routines can make it harder to maintain healthy eating and exercise habits, especially as people get older.

How to Reduce Belly Fat

Suazo recommends starting with nutrition. Maintaining a balanced diet, paying attention to overall calorie intake and getting an appropriate mix of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats can help support gradual fat loss.

Strength training is another important part of the process. He recommends working out the major muscle groups two to three times per week, using exercises such as squats, deadlifts, rows, push-ups and chest presses. Pull-ups can also help build strength in the upper body.

Cardiovascular activity complements strength training by supporting heart health and increasing energy expenditure.

Federal physical activity guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week, alongside muscle-strengthening exercises on at least two days.

Why Crunches Alone Won’t Eliminate Belly Fat

One common misconception is that repeatedly doing sit-ups or crunches will specifically burn fat around the stomach. Although these exercises can strengthen abdominal muscles, they do not selectively remove the fat covering them.

Reducing belly fat generally requires lowering overall body fat through a sustainable combination of nutrition, regular physical activity and strength training.

Progress varies from person to person and depends on factors such as starting body composition, diet, activity level and consistency. Some people may notice changes within several weeks, while others need more time.

A Healthier Goal Than Chasing a Perfect Physique

The conversation surrounding DiCaprio’s appearance highlights a broader point: improving health does not require achieving a perfectly sculpted body.

Rather than focusing exclusively on appearance, experts encourage people to build sustainable habits, remain physically active and pay attention to health indicators such as waist circumference and routine medical checkups.

A balanced diet, consistent exercise and adequate recovery can support both physical well-being and long-term health — without making six-pack abs the ultimate measure of success.
