81-Year-Old Mississippi Man Killed With His Own Gun During Terrifying Home Invasion as Sheriff Investigates Possible Religious Motive
Bobby McGill was asleep beside his wife when an alleged intruder broke into their home in the early hours of the morning. A desperate struggle ended in tragedy, leaving his family grieving and investigators searching for answers about what may have motivated the attack.
An elderly Mississippi man was fatally shot with his own firearm during a terrifying home invasion, authorities said, as investigators examine whether the alleged attacker may have been influenced by disturbing statements made the night before.
Bobby McGill, 81, was inside his home in Union County with his wife, Peggy, when Eric Basco allegedly forced his way into the residence at approximately 4 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, according to Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards.
What followed was a violent confrontation that cost McGill his life. His wife managed to escape and call 911, alerting authorities to the attack.
The case has since raised troubling questions about the circumstances surrounding the break-in, including whether the suspect specifically targeted the home or whether the incident was a burglary that escalated into deadly violence.
A Desperate Struggle Ends in Tragedy
According to Sheriff Edwards, McGill confronted Basco during the intrusion. The elderly homeowner reportedly kept a handgun in a chest near the foot of his bed, and investigators believe he may have attempted to reach the weapon as the struggle unfolded.
However, Basco allegedly gained control of the firearm and shot McGill multiple times.
“It appears that there was a struggle that had ensued between the assailant and the homeowner,” Edwards told Fox News Digital, describing the preliminary account investigators were piecing together.
Peggy McGill managed to get away from the immediate danger and contact emergency services. Her escape ensured that authorities were alerted, but the attack had already taken a devastating toll on the family.
For the McGills, what should have been another quiet night at home became an unimaginable nightmare.
Sheriff Raises Questions About Possible Religious Motive
While investigators believe burglary may have been the primary motive, Edwards revealed that authorities had obtained video recorded the evening before the deadly incident.
The footage reportedly showed Basco walking along a road approximately 1.5 miles from the McGill residence, raising his hands and shouting words that sounded like “God is dead.”
The sheriff stressed that investigators were not completely certain what the recording captured.
The detail nevertheless prompted questions about whether the suspect’s apparent statements could have had any connection to the attack.
Edwards also noted that a cross and a sign reading “Jesus is Lord” were displayed in the McGills’ yard. He questioned whether those religious symbols might have played a role in the suspect’s actions, while emphasizing that he had no proof establishing such a connection.
“I’m not saying it did. I’m not saying it had anything at all to do with it,” the sheriff explained, acknowledging that investigators might never determine whether religion influenced the incident.
At this stage, authorities have not established a religious motive. The possibility remains a question raised by the sheriff, not a confirmed finding of the investigation.
The Suspect Later Dies After Shooting Himself
According to Edwards, Basco went into a bathroom inside the residence after the shooting and shot himself. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died, according to subsequent reporting citing local authorities.
The sheriff also said Basco had no known criminal history beyond minor traffic violations.
