Engineer Accused of Raping and Murdering Girlfriend After She Decided to End Their Relationship

A 39-year-old engineer is standing trial in England, accused of raping and murdering his 37-year-old girlfriend after she decided to end their relationship. Prosecutors allege that years of increasingly controlling and abusive behavior culminated in a fatal attack when he realized she wanted him out of her life. The defendant denies the charges.

The accused, Stephen Sexton, is alleged to have killed Joanna Derkacz at their home in Waterlooville, Hampshire, in December 2023. Prosecutors told Winchester Crown Court that the relationship had become increasingly volatile, with Sexton allegedly displaying jealous and controlling behavior. The court heard that Derkacz had previously told her sister that he had tried to strangle her, but she managed to fight him off.

According to the prosecution, tensions escalated on December 10, 2023, after Derkacz returned home around 20 minutes later than expected following an evening out with friends. Sexton allegedly became angry and smashed her laptop. Derkacz subsequently left to stay with a friend before returning and asking him to move out. She reportedly agreed to let him remain temporarily while they arranged to sell a litter of puppies.

The following day, police officers visited Derkacz to check on her welfare. During the visit, she allegedly described Sexton as “very controlling” and “narcissistic,” telling officers that he disliked her going out. Prosecutors also referred to Sexton’s previous conviction for assaulting his former wife, arguing that his alleged history of violence was significant to the case.

Derkacz was later found dead in her bedroom by her sister, Arleta. Prosecutors said a post-mortem examination established that she died from compression of the neck. The court also heard evidence concerning DNA recovered during the investigation, which prosecutors say supports their allegation that a sexual assault occurred around the time of her death. Other evidence, including material linked to a shopping bag found near the bed, was also presented to the jury.

Sexton denies raping and murdering Derkacz, as well as allegations of coercive or controlling behavior. The trial is ongoing, and the prosecution’s claims have yet to be determined by the court. The case has highlighted concerns about escalating abuse in intimate relationships and the difficulty of predicting when controlling behavior may develop into lethal violence.
