7-Year-Old Girl’s Body Exhumed as Three Family Members Face Charges in Alleged Torture Death
The body of a seven-year-old girl from Long Island, New York, has been exhumed nearly a year after her death as investigators seek further evidence in a disturbing case involving allegations of prolonged abuse and torture. Jor’Dynn Duncan died in December 2025 while living in the care of her father’s fiancée, Emily Kelly. Prosecutors allege that the child endured months of systematic cruelty before succumbing to an untreated infection linked to her injuries.

According to prosecutors, Kelly, 50, allegedly subjected Jor’Dynn to repeated abuse over an extended period. Investigators say the child suffered close to 90 injuries, including stab wounds, and was sometimes restrained. Authorities allege that evidence of the abuse was documented, yet the child’s condition continued to deteriorate without the medical care she needed. The precise circumstances surrounding every injury remain part of the criminal investigation.
Two other members of Kelly’s family have also been charged. Her mother, Barbara Renner, 75, faces a manslaughter charge, while her daughter, Elyssa Seymore, 24, has been charged with unlawful imprisonment. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney described the allegations as prolonged and systematic abuse. All three defendants have pleaded not guilty, and the accusations must be established through the court process.
Jor’Dynn had been placed in Kelly’s care following a custody dispute involving her biological mother, Portia Duncan. Kelly, who is engaged to the girl’s incarcerated father, was granted custody despite the mother’s objections. Family representatives say the child’s mother is devastated by the loss and wants answers about how the alleged abuse went undetected.

The girl’s remains were exhumed during the summer with the family’s permission so investigators could conduct further examinations and seek additional forensic evidence. Her mother has also filed a $250 million wrongful-death lawsuit alleging that child-protection and other local authorities failed to adequately monitor the girl’s welfare. The civil allegations are separate from the criminal charges and have not been finally adjudicated.
The case has prompted renewed scrutiny of the systems responsible for protecting vulnerable children, including how warning signs such as repeated school absences or possible injuries are handled. For Jor’Dynn’s loved ones, the investigation represents an effort to understand what happened to the child and determine whether earlier intervention could have prevented her death.
