Israel Says Hamas Militant Linked to Shani Louk’s Abduction Has Been Killed in Gaza

Israeli forces have announced the death of Tamer Muhammad Ibrahim al-Sabbagh, a Hamas militant accused of taking part in the abduction of Shani Louk during the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. According to Israeli military officials, he was killed in an airstrike in Jabalia, northern Gaza, on Monday.

Shani Louk, a 22-year-old German-Israeli tattoo artist, was attending the Nova music festival when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel. Images showing her body in the back of a pickup truck in Gaza spread around the world, becoming one of the most widely recognized images from the attack.

Israeli authorities confirmed Louk’s death in October 2023 after forensic specialists identified part of her skull. Her remains were recovered by Israeli forces in Gaza and returned to her family in May 2024 for burial.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, al-Sabbagh was the final member of a five-person Hamas cell involved in the incident to be accounted for. Three other members had reportedly been killed earlier in the war, while another was captured by Israeli forces.

The Israeli military also alleged that al-Sabbagh had been involved in further attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians and efforts to rebuild Hamas’s military capabilities. These claims were made by Israeli authorities.

Louk’s story became a symbol of the human toll of the October 7 attack. Her family was eventually able to bring her home for burial, more than seven months after she was killed.
