Man Charged With Murder After Woman Is Fatally Shot Inside Missouri Hospital

James F. Lawson faces second-degree murder and firearm charges after a woman visiting him at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest.

A 39-year-old Kansas City man has been charged with murder after a woman was fatally shot while visiting him in a hospital room, according to authorities.

James F. Lawson faces charges of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with the October 22, 2026, killing at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence.

Surveillance Footage Examined
According to court documents, hospital surveillance footage showed Lawson in a wheelchair facing the woman inside his room during the early morning hours.

Investigators said the woman appeared to be struggling to breathe and began bending forward. Lawson was allegedly seen moving his hands around his pants and hip area while holding a dark object in his right hand.

Authorities later found the woman dead with a gunshot wound to her chest.

Police responded to the hospital after the woman was discovered and began investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Suspect Found With Holster and Ammunition
Investigators located Lawson after the incident. According to prosecutors, he had a holster on his hip, and ammunition was found in his wheelchair.

During questioning, Lawson reportedly told detectives that he remembered the woman being in his room but could not clearly recall what had happened. He attributed his memory difficulties to a medical condition and medication.

Court records also indicate that Lawson acknowledged being prohibited from possessing a firearm because of a prior felony conviction.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed that the firearm allegedly used in the shooting has been recovered.

Three Criminal Charges Filed
Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced the charges against Lawson on October 23.

A judge set his bond at $250,000 cash only.

The hospital said it was deeply saddened by the death of a visitor and confirmed that it was cooperating with law enforcement.

The investigation remains ongoing. Lawson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
