Texas Couple Charged After 17-Year-Old Girl Is Fatally Shot on Her Way to the Zoo in Seemingly Random Attack

A 17-year-old Missouri high school student was fatally shot while driving to meet a friend at the St. Louis Zoo, and a Texas couple has now been charged in connection with her death. Investigators say the suspects did not know the teenager, raising troubling questions about what led to the deadly highway shooting.

Alyssa Wilson was driving on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri, on October 14, 2026, when a gunman allegedly fired into the back of her vehicle. According to court documents, the bullet struck Wilson, leaving her incapacitated and causing her car to crash into a concrete median wall. She was rushed to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities say surveillance footage captured a white Buick Enclave pulling onto the highway shoulder. A person then exited the vehicle, and a gunshot was heard moments later. The suspect reportedly returned to the vehicle, which then fled the scene. Investigators later identified the SUV and tracked it to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois, where they located the couple.

Willie Herndon, 43, was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, while his wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, was charged with hindering prosecution. Prosecutors allege that Taiya helped her husband travel to Illinois after the shooting. Investigators also discovered a firearm in their hotel room and determined that the vehicle had been displaying license plates that did not belong to it. Willie Herndon additionally faces a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The loss has devastated Wilson’s family. Her father, Robert Hickman, said his daughter was excited about her future and had been looking forward to turning 18 in just 60 days. The family had also been preparing for their first vacation together to Disney, where Alyssa hoped to see Princess Tiana, her favorite character.

Both suspects were being held on cash bonds, with Willie Herndon’s bond set at $1 million and Taiya Herndon’s at $500,000. Investigators are also examining whether the shooting could be connected to another incident in which a vehicle was reportedly targeted after a white SUV pulled onto the roadside. Authorities have not announced a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
