CORONER WARNS OF POTENTIAL HOOVER TUMBLE DRYER FIRE RISK AFTER FATHER AND 9-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER DIE IN HOUSE BLAZE

A coroner in England has raised serious safety concerns about a Hoover tumble dryer after a house fire killed a 38-year-old father and his nine-year-old daughter. Sohaib Ahmed and his daughter, Manahal, died following the blaze at their home in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, on June 8, 2025. The warning was issued after an inquest found that the fire most likely began in a Hoover DX C10DCER-80 condenser tumble dryer in the kitchen.

Emergency services were called after a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the property at approximately 6:06 a.m. Firefighters arrived around 13 minutes later and found Ahmed unresponsive behind the front door. His two daughters were also found in the home and taken for medical treatment. One child survived after receiving extensive hospital care, while Manahal later died from smoke inhalation.

Senior coroner Martin Fleming said the precise cause of the fire could not be established because the appliance had been extensively damaged. Experts considered several possible internal electrical failures, including a defective solder joint or a problem involving the heater relay. The coroner warned that the dryer could burn almost completely once a fire became established, making it extremely difficult to identify the original fault.

The report also highlighted concerns that approximately 1.6 million Hoover- and Candy-branded condenser or vented tumble dryers could share characteristics with the model involved in the fatal fire. The Office for Product Safety and Standards has reportedly received a significant number of fire notifications involving this model from fire services across the UK.

The coroner has urged the manufacturer to investigate the model and similar incidents, identify any recurring faults, and consider possible design changes, additional safety guidance or a recall campaign. He also recommended that the company consider whether sales of the model should be suspended while the risks are examined. As of the report published on October 21, 2026, the exact mechanism that caused the fire remained undetermined.

Consumer safety organization Which? has also called for urgent action and advised owners of the DX C10DCER-80 to monitor official updates and avoid using the appliance if possible until more information becomes available. The case has renewed concerns about household appliance safety and whether further action is needed to prevent similar tragedies.
