Seconds From the Drain: Rescuer Lifts Stranded Duckling From Rushing Gutter Water

A tiny duckling, soaked and struggling to hold its footing, has become the unlikely star of a dramatic rescue in heavy rain. In the footage, fast moving water rushes along a narrow roadside gutter toward a metal storm drain, while the small yellow and brown bird presses itself close to the concrete curb.

The rescuer, wearing a bright lime green waterproof jacket with reflective bands and black waterproof gloves, crouches beside the drain and steadies one hand against the curb. With the other hand, the rescuer slowly moves into position downstream of the duckling, blocking the path toward the grate as the bird chirps and shifts its small feet.

Moments later, both gloved hands gently cup the duckling from underneath and lift it clear of the rushing water. Drops fall from its downy feathers as it is carried away from the current.

The rescue ends on higher ground, where the duckling is carefully placed on a sheltered grassy section beside the sidewalk. Away from the drainage current at last, it settles briefly and chirps, safe, dry ground finally beneath its feet.

What makes the moment so powerful is its scale. The danger is only a few centimetres wide, but for a bird this small, it is everything. One careful pair of hands, and one calm decision, was all it took to change the outcome.
