Mother Admits Manslaughter in Deaths of Her Three Young Children at Home in Bristol

Yasmeen Ali, 44, admitted three counts of manslaughter after her children were found dead at their family home in February 2024.

A 44-year-old mother in Bristol, England, has admitted responsibility for the deaths of her three young children after they were found with fatal injuries at their family home.

Yasmeen Ali initially faced three murder charges but pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Prosecutors accepted her plea after the court heard that she had been suffering from acute psychosis at the time of the killings, according to The Sun.

The children were identified as Fares Bash, 7, Joury Bash, 3, and nine-month-old Mohammed Bash. They were discovered dead at their home in the Sea Mills area of Bristol in February 2024.

Children Found With Fatal Injuries

Court proceedings and earlier inquest findings established that all three children had suffered fatal knife wounds, including injuries to their chests and necks. Fares also showed possible signs of asphyxia, the inquest heard.

Following the incident, Ali called emergency services. When police arrived, they found the children dead and Ali with self-inflicted injuries to her neck. Officers reportedly described her as being in a severely disturbed mental state.

Mental Health Was Central to the Case

The court heard that Ali had been experiencing acute psychosis when the children died. Two doctors also reportedly believed she had schizoaffective disorder.

Ali, who had previously worked as a nurse, had been discharged from mental health services just six days before the deaths, according to the report.

The case also prompted scrutiny of earlier contact between police and the family. Avon and Somerset Police referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. However, the watchdog concluded that no investigation was required.

Judge Orders Indefinite Hospital Treatment

Ali wept as she received an indefinite hospital order at a secure psychiatric facility.

Judge Justice Linden described her as a loving mother and said he believed she would not have committed the acts had she been well.

The case highlights the devastating consequences of the tragedy for the children’s family, as well as the serious questions surrounding Ali’s mental health and the support she received before the incident.

Father Speaks of Unbearable Loss

The children’s father, Alfil Bash, described his children as his “whole world” in a victim impact statement.

He expressed profound grief over losing all three children, saying their deaths had left a lasting wound and that he would spend the rest of his life mourning them.

The family, originally from Sudan, reportedly moved to the United Kingdom around seven years before the tragedy.
