Pennsylvania Mother Sentenced to Up to 63 Years for Killing Adopted 5-Year-Old Son With More Than 100 Injuries
A Pennsylvania mother who texted her husband that she had just finished beating their adopted son has been sentenced to decades in prison after being convicted in the death of the 5-year-old boy.

Lauren Maloberti, 37, was sentenced on October 22, 2026, to between 31½ and 63 years in state prison for the death of Landon Maloberti. A jury found her guilty of third-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children and conspiracy in May.
Prosecutors said Landon suffered more than 100 injuries, including a catastrophic brain injury, before he died in February 2023. His death was attributed to blunt-force trauma.
The case drew particular attention because of text messages in which Lauren allegedly described beating the child months before his final hospitalization.
Boy Arrived at Hospital With Catastrophic Brain Injuries
On January 30, 2023, Lauren and her husband, Jacob Maloberti, brought Landon to a medical facility in Westmoreland County, southeast of Pittsburgh. The boy was unconscious and suffering from a severe brain injury.
Medical staff reportedly told investigators that the couple appeared to show little urgency when they arrived. According to local reporting, Lauren suggested that Landon was unsteady because he had contracted COVID-19 about a month earlier.
Landon was transferred to a children’s hospital for further treatment. Doctors described the damage to his brain as catastrophic, with one physician reportedly saying that the child’s brain had been “obliterated.”
Despite medical efforts, Landon died approximately one week later.
A forensic examination revealed numerous injuries and evidence of earlier abuse, according to the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office. Investigators concluded that the child had suffered repeated physical harm while in the care of his adoptive family.
Text Messages Revealed Allegations of Earlier Abuse
During the investigation, authorities examined messages exchanged between Lauren and Jacob.
In July 2022, Lauren allegedly sent her husband a text saying, “I just got done beating your son,” followed by a message indicating that she was now wide awake.
Another exchange reportedly took place the following month. Lauren warned that Landon had better behave. When Jacob asked whether the boy had said anything to her, she allegedly replied that he was “gonna get it.”
Prosecutors presented these messages as evidence that the abuse had begun well before Landon’s final hospitalization.
Authorities also said Landon’s siblings provided accounts of mistreatment. Prosecutors alleged that Lauren had struck the boy, forced him to drink from a toilet and used a camera to monitor his movements.
The allegations formed part of the prosecution’s case that Landon had been subjected to repeated abuse rather than suffering from an unexplained medical condition.
Husband Testified Against His Wife
Jacob Maloberti, 46, testified against his wife during her trial. He denied harming Landon and said he had believed the boy was experiencing a medical problem.
According to his testimony, he did not begin questioning what had happened to Landon until after the couple was arrested and he learned more about the child’s injuries.
Jacob also said that he had lost trust in the person he believed he knew as his wife.
Lauren presented a different account in her defense. She accused Jacob of being controlling and abusive and alleged that he was responsible for harming Landon. She testified that she heard the child screaming on the morning he was taken to the hospital and believed her husband had injured him.
The jury ultimately rejected her defense on the charges for which she was convicted. She was found guilty of third-degree murder rather than first-degree murder.
Jacob’s case is being handled separately, and he has not yet been tried on the charges against him.
Mother Receives Sentence of More Than Three Decades
Following her conviction in May, Lauren faced a lengthy prison sentence. The judge ultimately imposed a term of 31½ to 63 years.
Her attorney has said the defense plans to appeal the verdict.
The sentence brings a major stage of the criminal proceedings to a close, but the case involving Jacob remains pending. He faces charges connected to Landon’s death and alleged abuse.
For prosecutors, the evidence—including the medical findings, witness accounts and text messages—was central to establishing the repeated abuse Landon allegedly endured.
The tragedy has also raised painful questions about the child’s safety while he was living with the adults responsible for his care.
Landon’s death remains the central focus of a case that exposed allegations of prolonged abuse within his adoptive home and resulted in a decades-long prison sentence for his mother.
