British Holidaymaker, 25, Dies in 80-Foot Fall From Malta Hotel Balcony After Night Out
Kieran Hughes, a software engineer from North Wales, died after falling from a sixth-floor hotel balcony in Malta in July 2025. A coroner has now concluded that his death was accidental following a night of heavy drinking.

A British holidaymaker died after falling approximately 80 feet from a hotel balcony during a trip to Malta, an inquest has heard.
Kieran Hughes, 25, from North Wales, was staying at the Cavalieri Art Hotel in St Julian’s with friends when the fatal incident occurred in the early hours of July 11, 2025.
The inquest at Caernarfon Coroner’s Court heard that Hughes had spent the previous evening drinking with his friends before returning to the hotel at around 3:30 a.m.
Night Out Ended in Tragedy
Hughes and his friends had visited a restaurant, casino and other venues, drinking beer, cocktails and limoncello throughout the evening.
CCTV footage showed Hughes and his roommate, Osian Jones, returning to the hotel appearing heavily intoxicated and holding on to one another for support.
At approximately 4:15 a.m., Hughes left their sixth-floor room wearing only boxer shorts. His fall was captured on CCTV, according to evidence presented at the inquest.
A member of the public subsequently alerted hotel staff after discovering a man lying outside the building. Emergency services attended, but Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene.
Roommate Was Asleep When He Fell
The inquest heard that Jones was asleep when Hughes left the room and could not initially be awakened because of his own level of intoxication.
He reportedly did not wake until around 6:30 a.m.
Investigators found no signs of a struggle inside the hotel room, and there was no evidence of an argument between the two friends. Authorities also found no evidence that another person was involved in Hughes’ death.
A post-mortem examination found that Hughes died from multiple blunt-force injuries caused by the fall. Toxicology evidence indicated a substantial level of alcohol in his bloodstream.
Coroner Rules Death Accidental
Coroner Elizabeth Dudley-Jones concluded that Hughes’ death was an accident.
She said he may have gone onto the balcony because he felt unwell or wanted fresh air. Given his severe intoxication, it was possible he did not realize he was falling.
The coroner described the case as a complete tragedy and acknowledged the profound impact of Hughes’ death on his family.
Family Pays Tribute to Talented Young Man
Hughes’ father, Alan, spoke of the family’s continuing grief, describing the emotional toll as something they experienced every day.
His friends remembered him as a highly capable young man, calling him “a legend and a genius.” Hughes worked as a software engineer and had been building a promising career.
His death has left his family and friends mourning a young man whose life ended during what had been intended as a holiday with friends.
