A man in his 30s has died after a car crashed through the front of a busy Lidl supermarket in Wolverhampton, leaving shoppers injured and the store badly damaged.

The devastating collision happened shortly before 6 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the supermarket on Finchfield Hill. Emergency services rushed to the scene after a vehicle smashed through the shopfront and came to rest inside the building.
West Midlands Police confirmed that the man, who was inside the supermarket, was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts to save him. Authorities said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

The crash caused widespread damage, with shattered glass, scattered merchandise and damaged checkout areas left across the supermarket floor. The vehicle reportedly travelled through the entrance and continued into the store, bringing an ordinary shopping trip to a sudden and terrifying end.
Witnesses described scenes of shock and confusion as customers and staff tried to understand what had happened. Footage from the aftermath showed the car inside the supermarket, surrounded by fallen displays and debris.
Emergency crews from West Midlands Police, West Midlands Fire Service and West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the incident. Four fire crews were dispatched as responders worked to assist those affected and secure the damaged building.
Several People Taken to Hospital
Ambulance crews assessed eight people at the scene, including the man who died.
A woman inside the supermarket was seriously injured and taken to hospital. The driver, a woman in her 70s, was also transported to hospital for assessment. Another man sustained injuries that were not initially believed to be serious and was taken for further treatment.
Four additional people were assessed at the scene and discharged after receiving advice from medical staff.
The scale of the emergency prompted road closures around Finchfield Hill, Finchfield Road West and Oak Hill as police and other emergency workers carried out their duties.
Driver Released as Investigation Continues
Investigators are examining the circumstances leading up to the collision, including whether the driver experienced a medical emergency before the car struck the building.
West Midlands Police confirmed on October 24 that the woman driver, who is in her 70s, had been released from hospital and would be spoken to as part of the ongoing inquiry. Two people remained in hospital with serious injuries, and specially trained officers were supporting the deceased man’s family.
Police appealed to motorists who were travelling near Finchfield Hill between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on October 23 to come forward, particularly anyone with dashcam footage showing a blue Renault Zoe before the crash.

The incident sent shockwaves through the local community. Witnesses described hearing a loud crash before seeing injured shoppers, broken glass and damaged displays inside the store.
Lidl said it was deeply saddened by the incident and was working with police while providing support to its employees. The supermarket remained closed following the collision as the investigation continued.
