Man Dies in A34 Crash as 1-Year-Old Girl Fights for Her Life After Van Hits Broken-Down Car

A fatal crash on a major road in Hampshire has left one man dead and a one-year-old girl fighting for her life in hospital.

The collision happened at around 3:13 p.m. on Friday, October 23, on the southbound A34 near Sutton Scotney. Police say a Mercedes Sprinter van collided with a broken-down Citroën Grand C4 Picasso that had stopped on the carriageway.

The Citroën’s driver, a man in his 40s, died at the scene. A woman and two children travelling in the car were also injured, with the young girl reportedly suffering life-threatening injuries.

The van’s 33-year-old driver, from Walsall, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. He was later released on bail while police continue their investigation. No finding of criminal responsibility has been established.

Investigators are now appealing to motorists who were travelling along the A34 between Upper Bullington and Worthy Down between 3 p.m. and 3:20 p.m. to come forward, particularly anyone who saw the broken-down vehicle or captured the moments before the collision on dashcam.

A few moments on a busy road have left a family facing an unimaginable loss, while a young child remains critically ill. Police are working to establish exactly how the devastating collision unfolded.
