Tennessee Woman Brutally Attacked With Hammer by Ex Just 30 Minutes After Police Helped Her Get Protection Order

A Tennessee woman was left with severe injuries to her head and face after her ex-boyfriend allegedly attacked her with a hammer just minutes after police helped her obtain a protection-related warrant. The disturbing incident happened after officers had responded to her home, assisted her in seeking legal protection and even drove her back to the residence — only for the alleged attacker to return shortly after they left.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, officers first visited the woman’s home early on October 24, 2026, after she reported receiving multiple threatening text messages from her former boyfriend, 39-year-old Ross Peterson. Police said Peterson had also appeared at her doorstep, where the two reportedly became involved in an argument. Concerned about the threats, the woman sought help from authorities.

Officers assisted her in obtaining a harassment warrant, which was issued at 6:15 a.m. that Saturday. After helping her with the process, police drove the woman back home. However, the situation allegedly escalated again soon after officers departed. Peterson reportedly returned to the property, and the woman heard a knock at the door. When she looked outside, she allegedly saw him damaging her car.

The woman went outside to confront her ex-boyfriend, according to the police account. Investigators allege that this was when Peterson attacked her with a hammer, inflicting extensive injuries to her head and face. The assault left her in critical need of assistance, and officers returned to the residence after she was found lying in the backyard shortly after 7 a.m. — less than an hour after the warrant had been issued.

Police and emergency responders attended to the injured woman, while investigators began searching for evidence. Officers later recovered a hammer believed to have been used in the attack. Peterson was also accused of stealing the woman’s cellphone, adding another alleged offense to the case. Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s name or personal details, citing concerns for her safety.

Peterson was still being sought by police as of October 27. He is expected to face charges of aggravated assault, harassment and theft of property once he is taken into custody and booked. Police have urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact Nashville Crime Stoppers or the Department of Emergency Communications. Authorities have warned the public not to approach him if they encounter him.

The case has raised painful questions about the dangers victims of domestic abuse can face even after seeking legal protection. Although police helped the woman obtain a warrant and return home safely, investigators allege that her former partner came back and attacked her shortly afterward. The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against Peterson have not yet been tested in court.
