Bonfire Night Chaos: Police Officers Injured as Fireworks Are Fired and a Car Smashes Into a Building

A night meant for fireworks and celebrations descended into serious disorder in North Shields, England, after a group of people allegedly turned on emergency services during Bonfire Night. Several police officers were injured as fireworks were launched toward them, while a car was filmed reversing into a building in a shocking scene captured on video. Police vehicles and fire engines were also damaged, prompting authorities to launch an investigation and condemn the violence.

The trouble broke out on November 5, 2026, on the Meadow Well estate. Footage circulating online showed a vehicle reversing toward a building and crashing into it, while fireworks were fired in the direction of police officers. Authorities said officers were also targeted with bricks and other objects. Five police vehicles and three fire engines were damaged during the disorder, leaving emergency services facing an increasingly dangerous situation as they attempted to respond.

According to Northumbria Police, the violence may have been fueled by misinformation circulating within the community. Rumors had spread that a building in the area was going to become a house of multiple occupancy, a type of shared accommodation. Police moved to clarify that this was not the plan: the site was intended to become a supermarket, with privately rented flats above it. Authorities said the false claims appeared to have contributed to tensions that escalated into violence.

Six people were arrested in connection with the disorder. They included a 25-year-old man, a 27-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman, and three teenage boys. All were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and remained in police custody at the time of the report. Police have not announced that any of those arrested have been convicted, and investigations into the incident are continuing.

The consequences extended beyond the injuries and property damage. Fire officials warned that damaged emergency vehicles were temporarily unavailable for responding to other calls, potentially affecting services for residents who might need urgent assistance. Local authorities strongly condemned the attacks, emphasizing that police officers and firefighters were there to protect the community, not to become targets of violence. The incident also raised concerns about how quickly false information can spread and contribute to real-world disorder.

The violence in North Shields was part of a wider series of disturbances reported across Britain during Bonfire Night. In Scotland, police and ambulance crews were also targeted with fireworks, and a police van was set alight in Glasgow. Several arrests were made in connection with those separate incidents. As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward. What should have been an evening of celebration instead left emergency workers injured, vehicles damaged, and communities facing the aftermath of unnecessary violence.
