British Backpacker, 22, Feared She Would ‘Die Alone’ After Being Thrown 13 Feet Down Ravine in Terrifying Greece Quad Bike Crash

A dream backpacking adventure in Greece turned into a terrifying fight for survival when a 22-year-old British woman was thrown down a 13-foot drop in a quad bike crash, leaving her with devastating internal injuries and fearing she might never make it home.

Courtney Leanne Boylan, from Manchester, was travelling around the Greek islands after spending months working and saving for her trip. Having recently graduated from university, she had set off alone to explore a country she loved, looking forward to new experiences and the freedom of travelling independently.

But while visiting the island of Naxos in June 2024, her journey took a frightening turn. Courtney had met up with friends and decided to go sightseeing on a rented quad bike with one of them. What began as an ordinary outing would end with her being rushed to hospital in critical condition.

According to her mother, Debbie, the pair were travelling along a road that became increasingly narrow. When a car approached, Courtney’s friend pulled over to allow it to pass. After the vehicle had gone by, the friend attempted to move off again, but the quad bike suddenly surged forward and crashed into a fence.

The impact sent Courtney tumbling down a steep embankment, falling approximately 13 feet into a ravine. The quad bike then landed on top of her, leaving her badly injured and struggling to breathe. The incident was particularly serious because she suffered a split liver, a torn spleen, severe internal bleeding and fluid in her lungs.

Courtney was taken to hospital before being transferred to intensive care in Athens, where doctors worked to treat her life-threatening injuries. Her family rushed to Greece after learning how serious the situation was, desperate to be by her side during an ordeal no parent wants to imagine.

When her mother finally reached her, Courtney’s words were heartbreaking. She reportedly told Debbie: “I thought I was gonna have to die alone.” The comment captured the fear she had experienced while facing a medical emergency far from home, without the comfort of her family nearby.

Debbie later spoke about the emotional toll of seeing her daughter in such a critical condition. She praised the doctors and local people who helped Courtney, describing them as amazing. She also believed that wearing a helmet had played a crucial role in saving her daughter’s life.

Although Courtney gradually began to show signs of improvement, the family faced another major challenge: getting her safely back to the United Kingdom for further treatment. They were told that a private air ambulance could cost around £36,000, while a commercial flight with medical assistance could cost approximately £5,000.

The financial pressure was made worse by a dispute over Courtney’s travel insurance. Despite having insurance, her family said the provider was refusing to cover the costs under the circumstances. With their daughter still requiring specialist care, they turned to the public for help.

Courtney’s sister, Chloe, launched a fundraising campaign to help pay for medical expenses and arrange her return home. She explained that Courtney had worked hard to save for her trip after graduating and had wanted to spend time travelling before deciding on her next steps in life.

The family’s appeal was simple: they wanted Courtney home safely, where she could receive the treatment and support she needed surrounded by loved ones. Every donation, they said, would help them get closer to bringing her back to Britain.

The accident also highlighted the risks associated with quad bikes on unfamiliar roads. Narrow routes, steep drops and sudden changes in terrain can leave riders vulnerable, particularly when they are exploring an unfamiliar destination. Wearing a helmet is an important safety measure, but it cannot eliminate every danger.

For Courtney and her family, what had begun as an exciting journey through Greece became an experience marked by fear, uncertainty and an urgent fight to bring her home. Her story serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a holiday adventure can change — and how precious the support of family can become when everything suddenly goes wrong.
