British Tourist, 41, Dies After Plunging Three Floors Down Hotel Stairwell in Spain as Heartbroken Sister Pays Tribute

TARRAGONA, SPAIN — A British man has died after falling three storeys down a hotel stairwell during a weekend getaway in Spain, leaving his family and friends devastated. Lee Jowitt, 41, from London, suffered fatal injuries in the early hours of October 11 after a night out in the coastal city of Tarragona. What was supposed to be a relaxing trip turned into an unimaginable tragedy, with emergency responders unable to save his life.

Lee had traveled to Tarragona to spend time with a British friend who lives in Barcelona. The pair reportedly returned to their accommodation on Carrer de la Unió shortly after midnight. At around 1 a.m., Lee is believed to have lost his balance while making his way up the stairs, plunging through the stairwell from a height equivalent to three floors. The exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain under investigation.

Hotel staff quickly contacted emergency services after discovering the seriousness of the incident. A doctor who lived in the same building was among the first to rush to Lee’s aid, attempting to help before professional medical teams arrived. Paramedics from Catalonia’s Medical Emergency System continued resuscitation efforts, but despite their attempts, Lee was pronounced dead at the scene.

News of his sudden death has left his loved ones struggling to comprehend the loss. His sister, Shivaun Jowitt, shared an emotional tribute on Facebook, expressing her heartbreak at losing her brother at just 41 years old. She wrote that she did not know how she would ever process what had happened, describing Lee as a truly special person and saying that their memories together would remain with her forever.

Friends have since organized a fundraising campaign to help bring Lee’s body back to the United Kingdom and support the family with funeral expenses. The organizer described him as a much-loved friend, colleague and brother, emphasizing the profound sadness his death has brought to those who knew him. Donations are intended to go directly to his sister, with any remaining funds from the repatriation effort helping cover funeral costs.

Catalonia’s regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, is investigating the circumstances of the fall. Preliminary findings suggest that the death was accidental, and authorities are not treating the incident as a suspected crime at this stage. Although some reports have raised questions about whether alcohol may have been involved earlier that evening, officials have not confirmed that it played any role. For Lee’s family, however, the immediate reality is a painful and unexpected goodbye to a man whose life ended far too soon.
