Chilling Moment Husband Admits Killing Wife and Hiding Her Body in Freezer While Their Three Children Remained at Home
A husband who brutally murdered his wife before hiding her body in a chest freezer has been jailed for life after a calculated attempt to conceal the killing unravelled. David Barraclough, 45, walked into a police station and calmly told a receptionist, “I’ve killed my wife.” The extraordinary confession, captured on CCTV, marked the end of a disturbing cover-up that had lasted for around two weeks.

Barraclough murdered his wife, Carolann Barraclough, 37, at their home in Horbury, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, in February 2026. Their three children were inside the house when he attacked her with a claw hammer while she was in bed. Prosecutors said she suffered multiple serious head injuries and could only have survived for a short time. After the killing, he wrapped her body in bedding, restrained her with tape and placed her inside a chest freezer in the family’s utility room.
But while Carolann’s body remained hidden inside their home, Barraclough allegedly set about convincing those around him that she was still alive. He told the children that their mother had gone to hospital and might be away for some time. He also sent messages from her phone to friends and relatives, pretending she was unwell and recovering. In one of the most heartbreaking aspects of the case, Carolann’s daughter continued exchanging messages with what she believed was her mother, unaware that her father was impersonating her.
Investigators later uncovered evidence that contradicted Barraclough’s claims of being devastated by his wife’s disappearance. During the weeks after the murder, he was seen on CCTV visiting local pubs. Financial records showed he had withdrawn substantial sums from the couple’s joint bank account, while digital evidence revealed that he had accessed dating apps and searched for sexual services. Prosecutors said these actions painted a very different picture from the grieving husband he attempted to portray.

On March 5, 2026, Barraclough went to Normanton Police Station and told a receptionist that he needed to discuss a serious private matter. When asked what it concerned, he replied that he had killed his wife. Police then went to the family home, where they discovered Carolann’s body inside the freezer. The shocking discovery brought the deception to an end and launched a murder investigation that would expose the full extent of his actions.
Barraclough initially tried to present himself as a victim of domestic abuse, claiming that Carolann had struck him with a hammer and that he had acted in self-defence. However, prosecutors challenged his account using CCTV footage, phone records, financial evidence and witness testimony. He ultimately pleaded guilty to murder on the day his trial was due to begin at Leeds Crown Court.
On October 9, 2026, Barraclough was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 21 years and five months before he can be considered for release. He did not attend his sentencing hearing. The court heard how his actions had inflicted devastating trauma on Carolann’s family, particularly the children, who were led to believe their mother was receiving medical treatment while her body was hidden in their own home.
The case has left a family grieving not only the loss of a mother and wife, but also the painful consequences of the deception that followed her death. Prosecutors praised Carolann’s eldest daughter for her courage in providing vital evidence. Although the sentence cannot undo what happened, the court’s decision brings a measure of justice in a case marked by extreme violence, calculated lies and the betrayal of a family’s trust.
