College Homecoming Party Turns Chaotic as Deck Collapses, Injuring at Least 28 People

A homecoming celebration near William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, took a frightening turn when a back deck suddenly collapsed, injuring at least 28 people and prompting a major emergency response.

The incident happened on Friday night, October 23, at an off-campus residence on the 200 block of Matoaka Court. Emergency dispatchers received a report of the structural collapse at approximately 10:07 p.m., according to city officials.

Authorities said 13 people were transported to hospitals by emergency crews, while another 15 sought medical treatment on their own. Fortunately, officials reported that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The party was reportedly taking place during the university’s homecoming weekend. Students were among those injured, and witnesses described a large emergency response, with ambulances and fire trucks filling the surrounding streets.

Neighbors also stepped in to help those affected. One resident said people worked together to assist partygoers and arrange rides after the collapse, while emergency personnel rushed to the scene.

William & Mary officials said the university was coordinating support for affected students, including assistance with health, wellness and academic needs. The City of Williamsburg’s Codes Compliance Division is inspecting the property as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

What began as a night of celebration quickly became a frightening ordeal for dozens of students. Although no life-threatening injuries were reported, the incident has left serious questions about what caused the deck to give way.
