Drunk Driver Who Crashed Into Bedroom of Sleeping 82-Year-Old Man Learns His Fate

A Florida real estate developer has been sentenced to six years in prison after driving drunk into an elderly man’s home, killing him while he slept in his bedroom.

Allen Matis, 68, pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter and related felony charges in connection with the June 24 crash in the Coral Terrace area of Miami-Dade County. The vehicle slammed into Henry Bezy’s home, trapping the 82-year-old beneath the car. Bezy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors said Matis had been drinking at the Ritz-Carlton before getting behind the wheel. He apparently drove past his own home before crashing into Bezy’s residence. Investigators reported that his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit and that he failed to brake before impact.

During sentencing, Matis expressed remorse, saying Bezy’s death was a burden he would carry for the rest of his life. But the judge emphasized the devastating consequences of his decision, reminding him that the victim had a family and that the crash had left lasting pain.

Bezy’s sister, Claire, remembered her brother as a vibrant person who was always available to talk. She described the loss as an irreplaceable void in the family’s life.

In addition to his six-year prison sentence, Matis must serve probation, complete 200 hours of community service, and surrender his driver’s license.

A single decision to drive while intoxicated destroyed a life and left a family grieving. The sentence closes one chapter of the case, but it cannot undo the loss suffered by those who loved Henry Bezy.
