Five Suspects Arrested After Farmer Is Shot and Has Both Ears Cut Off During Horrific Farm Robbery
A 50-year-old South African cattle farmer is recovering in hospital after suffering a horrifying attack in which armed robbers allegedly shot him, stabbed him and cut off both his ears. The violence took place at his farm near Ventersdorp, in South Africa’s North West province, and has sparked widespread outrage. Police have now arrested five suspects in connection with the attack.

The victim, identified as Donovan Marx, was reportedly ambushed on October 28, 2026, shortly after arriving at his property in Syferfontein. According to police, three masked and armed men first confronted a farmworker who was mowing the lawn. They allegedly tied the worker’s hands and feet with cable ties and demanded to know where the farm owner was. When Marx arrived in his red Isuzu pickup truck, the attackers allegedly opened fire, striking him in the upper body.
The attackers then dragged Marx inside the farmhouse, restrained him and subjected him to further violence. His ears were cut off, and he was also stabbed and assaulted. The gang searched the property before stealing three firearms from a safe and escaping in his vehicle. The ordeal might have continued even longer had the farmworker not managed to free himself and call for help. Marx was rushed to hospital, where he received emergency treatment. His family later confirmed that surgeons had to remove part of his intestine and were unable to save his ears.

The investigation has now resulted in five arrests. Police initially detained two suspects before apprehending three more near Potchefstroom on November 1. The suspects are aged between 26 and 56. During the operation, officers reportedly seized four firearms, including two believed to be connected to the attack, as well as clothing and jewellery. Marx’s stolen vehicle was also recovered abandoned. The five suspects are facing charges including house robbery, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
The attack has drawn strong reactions from South African officials and farming communities, particularly because of the extreme violence allegedly inflicted on the victim. Police representatives have praised investigators and members of the community who helped provide information. The case has also renewed calls for improved security and faster emergency responses for people living and working on isolated farms, where help can sometimes be difficult to reach.
For Marx’s family, the arrests are an important development, but the road to recovery remains difficult. He was reported to be in critical but stable condition following the attack, while later reports said he was recovering in hospital. As the suspects face the legal process, investigators will continue building their case to establish the full circumstances of the robbery and the individual roles of those arrested.
