FLORIDA MAN SENTENCED TO 40 YEARS AFTER STABBING FATHER TO DEATH IN FRONT OF WIFE AND CHILD OVER FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE CAR SALE

A Facebook Marketplace vehicle sale ended in a devastating tragedy when a dispute over a car title escalated into a deadly attack inside a Florida family’s home. Now, the man responsible will spend decades behind bars for killing 33-year-old Kenny Dale Ashby in front of his wife and young daughter.

Joseph Michael Lynch, 47, recently pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and burglary with assault or battery in connection with Ashby’s death. Circuit Court Judge Brantley Clark sentenced Lynch to 40 years in prison for each charge, with the sentences running concurrently. That means he will serve both sentences at the same time.

Prosecutors described the killing as a senseless act of violence that shattered the victim’s family. They said Ashby’s relatives agreed with the plea agreement and the 40-year prison sentence, which one prosecutor characterized as essentially a life sentence for Lynch.

A Disagreement Over a Vehicle Turned Deadly

The fatal confrontation happened late at night on July 3, when Lynch arrived at Ashby’s home on Ormond Avenue in Springfield, a small community near Panama City, Florida.

The two men had reportedly been involved in a dispute after Lynch purchased a vehicle from Ashby through Facebook Marketplace. The vehicle did not come with a title, and Ashby had promised to locate the necessary paperwork.

However, Lynch became increasingly upset as the process took longer than he expected. According to prosecutors, the disagreement escalated dramatically when Lynch kicked down the door of Ashby’s home and attacked him with knives.

Ashby was stabbed multiple times in front of his wife, young daughter and three other adults who were inside the house at the time.

Responding officers found Ashby suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to Ascension Sacred Heart Bay, but his injuries proved fatal. He died in the early morning hours of July 4.

What began as a dispute over a vehicle transaction had become an unimaginable tragedy for a family inside its own home.

Arrested Near the Scene

Before Lynch entered his plea, prosecutors had been preparing to take the case to trial. They were prepared to present evidence about the dispute over the vehicle, which had developed over several days, as well as allegations that Lynch brought two knives to the confrontation and used them during the attack.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Lynch also took the cellphones belonging to people inside the home before fleeing.

As he left the area, Lynch reportedly told bystanders to call 911. Officers later located him near the scene on Ormond Avenue, where witnesses indicated he was in a driveway a few houses away.

According to reporting by local media, police found Lynch lying face down in the street. He reportedly told officers, “I did it.”

Lynch ultimately pleaded no contest to the charges, allowing the case to move to sentencing without a trial.

Wife Describes a Family Shattered by Loss

During the sentencing hearing, Ashby’s widow delivered a heartbreaking statement about the lasting impact of her husband’s death.

She told the court that the killing had completely shattered the family and left them struggling to feel safe, even in their own home. The quiet hours of the night, she explained, were now filled with painful memories and recurring trauma.

Her words conveyed the continuing anguish of losing her husband in such a violent way, while also having to live with the memories of what happened that night.

The prosecutor also read a statement written by Ashby’s daughter, who expressed the profound pain of losing her father.

In her statement, she reflected on the life her father lived, the love he gave his family and the pain his death had left behind. She described her father as her first love, capturing the special bond between a child and a parent that had been abruptly taken away.

The statements offered a glimpse into the devastating consequences that extended far beyond the courtroom. Ashby’s death left his family grieving not only the loss of a loved one, but also the future they had expected to share with him.

A 40-Year Sentence

Prosecutor Peter Overstreet said the outcome brought a measure of justice to Ashby’s loved ones after what he described as a senseless and violent attack.

Lynch received 40 years in prison for second-degree murder and another 40 years for burglary with assault or battery. Because the sentences will run concurrently, he will serve them at the same time rather than one after the other.

For Ashby’s family, the sentence cannot undo the violence that took place or restore the husband and father they lost. But prosecutors said the agreement reflected the family’s wishes and ensured Lynch would face a lengthy prison term for the killing.

The case stands as a tragic reminder of how a disagreement over a private transaction can spiral into devastating violence—and how the consequences can permanently change the lives of everyone left behind.
