Florida Mom Arrested After Allegedly Leaving 4 Children Home Alone for Las Vegas Trip — 9-Year-Old Son Was Injured During Her Absence
Irene Miller, 50, reportedly arranged for a babysitter to check on her children during the day but did not require overnight supervision. The situation came to light after one of the children called 911 when a dumbbell struck his younger brother.

A Florida mother is facing four child neglect charges after authorities say she left her four children, ages 9 to 14, without overnight adult supervision while traveling to Las Vegas for work. Irene Miller, 50, of Kissimmee, allegedly left her children at their Osceola County home on October 18, 2026. What brought the situation to the attention of police was an emergency call three days later, when one of the children reported that a dumbbell had fallen on her 9-year-old brother’s head.
Deputies from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home shortly after 8:30 p.m. on October 21. When they arrived, they found all four children inside without an adult present. The injured boy was taken to Celebration Hospital for medical treatment and was later released. Investigators said Miller was contacted by phone and told deputies she was working in Las Vegas and expected to return on October 23. Further investigation revealed that she had been away since October 18.
Miller reportedly told authorities that she had arranged for a babysitter from Tampa, approximately two hours away, to help the children get ready for school in the mornings and check on them after school. However, the babysitter was not required to stay overnight. According to information provided by the sheriff’s office to PEOPLE, the babysitter confirmed that arrangement. Investigators also reported that although the house was clean, there was not enough food available for all four children.
The circumstances surrounding the 9-year-old’s injury raised further concerns. When a deputy called Miller to inform her that her son had been hurt and was being taken to the hospital, she allegedly responded dismissively, saying she was working and did not have time to talk before ending the call. Kim Montes, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, described the response to PEOPLE. Miller reportedly declined to speak with detectives when they later met her upon her return to Florida.
The children’s father, Mark Miller, was contacted and agreed to take all four children into his care. He had been living elsewhere because of a restraining order obtained by Irene following an alleged domestic assault in August. Mark has pleaded not guilty to battery charges connected to that separate allegation. According to the sheriff’s office, the responding deputy noted that the children appeared happy to see their father. Mark later created a fundraiser to help cover expenses while caring for the children, explaining that he had become their unexpected sole caregiver.
Irene Miller was arrested on October 23, as she arrived at Orlando International Airport after returning from Las Vegas. She was charged with four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and was released on bond the following day. The case has raised serious questions about the arrangements made for the children while their mother was away. Although Miller reportedly hired someone to check on them during the day, investigators allege that the absence of overnight adult supervision placed all four children at risk. The charges remain allegations, and Miller is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
