A seemingly minor disagreement over a common courtesy ended in a devastating loss of life outside a PetSmart store in Dallas, Texas. Keona Hampton, now 23, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting 41-year-old Cecilia Simpson in front of her daughter. The sentence follows a guilty plea Hampton entered on September 23, 2026, nearly a year after the October 9, 2025, shooting. According to court records reported by CBS Texas, Hampton accepted a plea agreement that brought the case to a conclusion.

The confrontation reportedly began at a nearby Five Below store. According to an arrest affidavit, Simpson had held the door open for Hampton as they were leaving, but Hampton did not say thank you. Simpson reportedly became upset, and the two women began arguing. Simpson then left with her daughter and a witness and drove to a PetSmart in the same shopping center. However, the disagreement did not end there. Hampton allegedly followed them into the store, where another argument broke out. Employees eventually asked the women to leave, hoping to stop the disturbance.

Outside the store, the situation escalated once again. According to the police affidavit, Hampton threw a drink bottle at Simpson’s vehicle as Simpson and her daughter were preparing to leave. Simpson approached Hampton, and a physical fight followed. The witness told investigators that Simpson struck Hampton several times while telling her to leave them alone. At some point, the witness stepped away from the confrontation. That was when Hampton allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired three shots at Simpson. The mother collapsed in the parking lot as her daughter witnessed the terrifying scene.

Hampton then left the area in her vehicle, according to surveillance footage reviewed by investigators. Simpson was rushed to a hospital but later died from her injuries. An emergency-room nurse who happened to be nearby attempted to perform CPR before paramedics arrived. The nurse later told local television station KDFW that the daughter had been beside her mother throughout the incident. She also recalled hearing the young woman screaming for her mother, describing a moment that stayed with her long after the shooting.

Police located Hampton later that same day and arrested her during a traffic stop. During questioning, she reportedly admitted to arguing with Simpson, throwing a bottle at her vehicle, fighting with her and ultimately firing the gun. According to the affidavit, Hampton told investigators she was trying to get Simpson away from her. She remained in custody following her arrest and ultimately pleaded guilty to murder. Under the sentence, she will receive credit for 303 days already served in jail.

For Simpson’s family, the prison sentence brings a legal conclusion to a tragedy that unfolded in front of her daughter over an argument that began with a missed expression of gratitude. A woman who had simply held a door open for someone lost her life after the disagreement followed her across a shopping center. The 30-year sentence cannot undo the loss or erase what her daughter witnessed, but Hampton’s guilty plea means she has now admitted responsibility for the killing. What began as a brief exchange between strangers ended with a family forever changed.
