FLORIDA POLICE OFFICER ACCUSED OF TAKING OVER DECEASED MAN’S HOME AND STEALING HIS IDENTITY FOR FOUR YEARS

A Florida police officer is facing multiple felony charges after investigators accused him of taking control of a deceased man’s home and using the man’s personal information for years. Brian Louis Sguros, a 35-year-old officer with the Lauderhill Police Department, reportedly discovered 71-year-old Dennis West dead inside his home on July 11, 2022, while responding to a welfare check. West’s death was later determined to have resulted from natural causes. What initially appeared to be a routine call would later become the starting point of a lengthy investigation.

According to investigators, Sguros allegedly contacted the medical examiner’s office after West’s death and identified himself as the deceased man’s friend. He reportedly claimed that West had no living relatives, a statement authorities allege was untrue. Investigators say Sguros subsequently used West’s identity to manage expenses associated with the property, including property taxes and utility bills. He is also accused of accessing law enforcement databases to obtain West’s personal information and forging the man’s signature on documents related to a renovation permit.

The alleged scheme came to light after West’s rightful heirs were identified and the property was sold to a real estate company. When a representative attempted to take possession of the home, Sguros reportedly handed over the keys but sought compensation for improvements he claimed to have made. Authorities say he claimed to have spent at least $214,000 renovating the property and later submitted a complaint seeking reimbursement of more than $200,000.

Sguros was arrested on October 20, 2026, and faces five charges, including official misconduct and offenses related to the alleged misuse of a deceased person’s identification. He was released on a $25,000 bond and placed on administrative leave without pay, according to reports. The case has raised serious questions about the alleged misuse of personal information and the steps that allowed the situation to continue for years. However, the charges remain allegations, and Sguros is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
