Lead: A clip capturing the moment a rescue worker scooped up a soaked calico kitten from an escalator amid “floodwaters” inside a shopping mall is moving viewers to tears online.

According to bodycam footage from the rescue worker, the incident took place on the afternoon of August 28, when floodwaters poured into the ground floor of a shopping mall, turning it into a sea of water.

Amid the chaos, a tiny calico kitten, its fur completely soaked, had found temporary shelter on a stationary escalator step. The kitten crouched there, eyes wide open, staring toward the rescuer.

Without hesitation, the rescuer approached, gently cradled the kitten’s tiny body in gloved hands, and carried it to a dry area upstairs. The kitten lay still and blinked calmly, as if understanding it was finally safe.

The 15-second clip has since racked up hundreds of thousands of views and countless emotional comments. Many are calling the rescue worker a “silent hero” in the face of disaster.

“In times of calamity, not even the smallest life is left behind. That is what makes us believe in kindness,” one widely-liked comment read.
