He Turned an Old School Bus Into His Dream Barbershop — Then a Stranger Killed Him After a Haircut

A young barber who turned an ordinary school bus into a mobile barbershop was building the business he had always dreamed of when his life was cut short in a shocking murder-for-hire plot. More than four years after his death, the man prosecutors say orchestrated the killing has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Ilya Shimonov, 32, known to his customers as “Mike the Barber,” was shot and killed on January 3, 2022, in the parking lot of a hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona. He had just finished a haircut appointment at his converted school bus, which he used as a mobile barbershop. What should have been an ordinary workday ended in tragedy when a gunman allegedly approached and shot him multiple times.

According to prosecutors, Robert Celifie, 45, of California, arranged the killing and recruited Chaze Cable to carry it out. Investigators believe the plot centered on Shimonov’s cellphone, although authorities have not established a clear explanation for why the men wanted the device. Prosecutors said Shimonov did not know either man, despite the possibility that they shared acquaintances.

The investigation took a significant turn when detectives discovered that Shimonov’s cellphone had disappeared from the crime scene. Police tracked the stolen device as it traveled from Scottsdale to Las Vegas and eventually Los Angeles. Investigators linked its movements to a vehicle belonging to Celifie and determined that Cable had traveled to Arizona in the car before the shooting.

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Celifie provided Cable with money, a firearm, photographs of Shimonov, the location and timing of the planned attack, and instructions to take the victim’s phone. Investigators also uncovered messages exchanged between the men before the killing. The evidence gathered during the investigation included surveillance footage from dozens of locations and 48 search warrants executed across five states.

Cable was convicted of conspiracy, first-degree murder and first-degree burglary in 2025 and received a life sentence. On August 25, 2026, a jury found Celifie guilty of the same offenses. He was sentenced to natural life in prison on October 26, 2026, meaning he will spend the remainder of his life behind bars. Prosecutors emphasized that although Celifie was not the person who pulled the trigger, they held him responsible for arranging the killing.

For Shimonov’s family, the sentencing brought a measure of accountability but could never undo their loss. At a press conference, his mother, Bella Shimonov, spoke emotionally about her son’s ambition and the business he worked so hard to build. His mobile barbershop had been more than a source of income; it represented a dream he had pursued and brought to life himself. Remembering that achievement, she said it was his dream to own a barbershop on wheels—and he had made it happen.

The case has now resulted in life sentences for both men convicted in the plot. Yet behind the courtroom verdicts is the story of a 32-year-old entrepreneur whose future was taken away while he was simply doing his job. His family hopes the outcome will bring some peace as they continue to remember the man behind the name “Mike the Barber.”
