Is a Serial Killer Targeting Homeless Men in Michigan? Police Reveal a Disturbing Pattern Behind Five Deaths

Five men are dead. Their bodies were found along the same Michigan river trail, and investigators believe the circumstances surrounding their deaths may be connected. Now, police are examining a disturbing pattern that has raised a chilling possibility: Could a serial killer be operating in the area?

The deaths occurred along the Lansing River Trail in Lansing, Michigan, between October 2025 and August 2026. Although investigators have not confirmed that a serial killer is responsible, police say the similarities between the cases are serious enough to warrant a closer look.

For people who regularly use the trail — particularly those experiencing homelessness — the investigation has raised urgent concerns about safety.

Five Deaths, One Troubling Connection

At a press conference on October 2, Lansing Police Chief Robert Backus revealed that investigators were examining five deaths they believe could be related.

According to police, all five victims were white men between the ages of 22 and 70 who were believed to be experiencing homelessness.

Investigators also identified similarities in the timing and nature of the attacks. They suspect the victims were assaulted during the early morning hours, when the area may have been quieter and fewer people were around to witness what happened.

Four of the victims suffered what police described as significant blunt-force trauma to the face. The fifth victim died from stab wounds.

The concentration of the incidents along the Lansing River Trail has become another important element of the investigation.

Rather than treating the deaths as isolated events, detectives are comparing the circumstances of each case, searching for evidence that might reveal whether the same person was responsible.

“We look for information. We look for trends. We look for patterns. And we have developed some,” Backus said during the briefing.

However, authorities have emphasized that identifying similarities does not automatically prove that the killings were committed by one person.

The Attacks Appeared to Escalate After Months of Silence

One detail has particularly caught investigators’ attention: the timing of the deaths.

The first killing in the series dates back to October 2025. After that initial case, there was a period without another reported attack believed to be connected to the investigation.

Then, between July and August 2026, four more victims died.

The sudden concentration of deaths during those two months intensified concerns that the cases might share a common perpetrator.

Why did the incidents appear to stop for months before several victims were killed within a relatively short period? Was the timing coincidental, or could it offer investigators a clue about the person responsible?

Police have not provided a definitive explanation. Detectives are continuing to examine the timeline alongside forensic evidence, witness accounts and other details that could help establish whether the cases are connected.

For investigators, even a seemingly minor similarity could prove significant.

One Suspect Has Been Charged — But Is He Connected to the Other Deaths?

Authorities have made an arrest in one of the five cases.

Daniel Lusk, 22, was found stabbed to death on August 20, 2026. Police subsequently arrested Edward Joseph Smith, who has been charged with open murder in connection with Lusk’s death.

But investigators have not publicly linked Smith to the other four deaths.

Lusk’s case differs from the others because he was the only victim reported to have died from stab wounds. The remaining victims suffered blunt-force injuries and died after being transported to a hospital.

That distinction raises another important question: Does the difference in the victims’ injuries suggest separate perpetrators, or could the cases still be connected despite the apparent differences?

At this stage, police have not reached a definitive public conclusion.

Smith’s charge relates to Lusk’s death, and it would be inaccurate to assume he is responsible for the other victims without evidence establishing that connection.

The possibility of a serial killer remains an investigative theory, not a confirmed finding.

Why Investigators Are Asking the Public for Help

Police are continuing to seek information from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity along the Lansing River Trail, particularly during the early morning hours when investigators believe the attacks occurred.

People who regularly use the trail, live nearby or may have seen something unusual could potentially provide information that detectives have not yet uncovered.

Investigators are also examining whether the victims shared other circumstances beyond their housing status and the locations where they were found.

For now, officials have not publicly identified a suspect believed to be responsible for all five deaths.

The lack of a confirmed connection means the investigation remains complex. Detectives must determine whether the similarities point to one offender or whether multiple unrelated crimes have occurred in the same area.

A Community Left With More Questions Than Answers

The Lansing River Trail stretches through Michigan’s capital city, offering a place for people to walk, exercise and spend time outdoors. But the string of violent deaths has brought a darker reality into focus for a community already concerned about the safety of vulnerable residents.

The victims were men whose lives ended under violent circumstances, and investigators are working to establish what happened to each of them.

For their families and those who knew them, determining whether the deaths are connected could be an essential step toward justice.

For the wider community, the unanswered questions are equally troubling.

Is one person responsible for all five deaths? Why were the victims apparently attacked during the early morning hours? And will investigators discover a connection that finally explains the disturbing pattern along the trail?

Police have not confirmed the existence of a serial killer. But by publicly acknowledging the similarities and asking for information, authorities have made clear that they are taking the possibility seriously.

Until investigators establish who is responsible — and whether the cases are connected — the mystery surrounding the Lansing River Trail deaths remains unresolved.
