Laura Owens Sentenced to Jail After Fake Pregnancy Scheme Targeting Former ‘Bachelor’ Star
PHOENIX, ARIZONA — Laura Owens, the Arizona woman who falsely claimed she was pregnant with twins fathered by former The Bachelor star Clayton Echard, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and seven years of probation after pleading guilty to four felony charges.

The sentence was handed down on October 23, 2026. The case stemmed from allegations that Owens fabricated pregnancy evidence, falsified medical information and lied under oath during legal proceedings involving Echard and another man.
Judge Jeffrey Rueter warned that violating the terms of her probation could result in a substantially longer period of incarceration.
False Pregnancy Claims Led to Legal Battle
The case gained national attention in 2023, when Owens filed a paternity lawsuit against Echard, claiming he had fathered her unborn twins following an encounter between them.
Echard disputed her claims. Owens later said she had miscarried and dropped the paternity case.
The dispute eventually drew the attention of the courts after questions arose about the authenticity of the evidence she had submitted.
In 2024, a judge in the civil case found that Owens had falsified sonograms, altered medical records and lied under oath. The judge ordered her to pay Echard’s legal fees and referred the matter to prosecutors for a criminal investigation.
Investigators Uncovered Fabricated Evidence
Prosecutors alleged that Owens engaged in a scheme between May 2023 and June 2024 to convince Echard that she was pregnant.
Investigators said she altered an ultrasound image, fabricated a pregnancy video and repeatedly made false statements under oath during the paternity proceedings.
The criminal investigation later expanded to include allegations involving another man, Gregory Gillespie, whom Owens had dated in 2021.
According to prosecutors, Owens also made false pregnancy claims involving Gillespie and used fabricated records and other women’s identities to support her claims.
In August 2026, Owens pleaded guilty to four felony counts: two counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices, one count of perjury and one count of taking the identity of another. Other charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
Judge Orders Jail Time and Probation
During the October 23 sentencing hearing, the judge ordered Owens to serve 30 days in county jail, followed by seven years of probation.
The court also warned that violating probation could expose her to a significantly longer prison term. Reports indicated that the consequences could include up to 12 years of incarceration, depending on the violation and applicable sentencing provisions.
The judge acknowledged the emotional and financial harm caused to the victims but determined that a lengthy prison sentence was not appropriate under the circumstances.
Owens apologized in court, expressing regret for the pain, distress and expense her actions had caused.
However, Echard argued that incarceration was necessary, saying he believed Owens could pose a continuing threat to others.
Clayton Echard Describes the Impact
Echard, who starred in Season 26 of The Bachelor in 2022, has spoken publicly about the toll the case took on his life.
The legal dispute stretched across several years, requiring him to defend himself against the paternity allegations and participate in court proceedings.
His attorney also described the prolonged case as emotionally exhausting for Echard and said his client wanted to move forward with his life.
At the sentencing hearing, Echard urged the court to impose a harsher punishment. He expressed frustration with the outcome and argued that the consequences should reflect the impact the scheme had on him and the other alleged victims.
The case also drew attention through extensive media coverage and true-crime discussions examining the allegations and their legal consequences.
A Second Man Was Also Involved in the Case
The criminal proceedings were not limited to Echard.
Prosecutors expanded their investigation after examining Owens’ alleged conduct involving Gillespie, who dated her in 2021.
Authorities alleged that the separate incident involved false pregnancy claims and fabricated documentation. The resulting charges became part of the wider criminal case resolved through Owens’ guilty plea.
The plea agreement dismissed several remaining charges, allowing the case to proceed to sentencing without a trial on those counts.
What Happens Next?
Owens must comply with the conditions imposed by the court during her probation. The judge’s warning means that any violation could result in additional incarceration.
The sentence concludes a major phase of a case that began with a disputed paternity claim and developed into a criminal investigation involving fabricated evidence and sworn statements.
For Echard and the other man involved, the legal outcome brings a degree of finality after years of proceedings. However, Echard’s reaction to the sentence shows that the consequences of the case extend beyond the courtroom.
