Man Accused of Shooting Girlfriend Dead in His Hospital Room — Then Tells Police, “The Cameras Say It All”
A hospital visit ended in tragedy in Independence, Missouri, after a 39-year-old man allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend while she was visiting him as a patient.

James F. Lawson is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jessica Cyrus, who was found dead from a gunshot wound to the chest inside his hospital room on October 22, according to police and court documents cited by Law&Crime.
Investigators believe the shooting happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. at Centerpoint Hospital. Surveillance footage allegedly captured Lawson entering his room before the door reopened moments later. According to the probable cause statement, Cyrus appeared to be struggling to breathe, while Lawson was seen handling a dark object near his hip.
When officers arrived later that morning, Lawson had reportedly left the hospital. He was eventually located at a nearby shopping center.
During questioning, Lawson allegedly said his memory of the incident was unclear, attributing his confusion to medication and a severe urinary tract infection. But investigators also reported that he made a striking remark about the hospital’s surveillance system.
“The cameras say it all,” Lawson allegedly told police.
Officers later found a holster, a box of 9 mm ammunition and a loose round concealed beneath the seat of his motorized wheelchair, according to the complaint. No firearm or shell casings were found in the hospital room.
Lawson faces additional charges of armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Reports stated that he was being held at the Jackson County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash-only bond.
The investigation now centers on the evidence investigators say was captured on surveillance footage and the circumstances surrounding Cyrus’s final moments. Lawson’s charges remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
