Outrage in Mexico After 12-Year-Old Girl and Grandmother Are Killed — Suspect Dies in Mob Attack

A horrific double killing in southern Mexico has sparked widespread outrage after a 12-year-old girl and her grandmother were found dead, followed by a violent confrontation in which one of the men accused in the case was killed by an angry crowd.

The victims were identified as Ariana Scarlett Velázquez Cruz, 12, and her grandmother, Miriam Cruz Alpuche, 55. The pair disappeared on October 19 after leaving home to visit family land in the Tanchichal area of Ostuacán, in the state of Chiapas. When they failed to return, relatives and local residents began searching for them.

Miriam’s body was discovered near a stream on October 21, reportedly wrapped in plastic and a covering. Ariana was found two days later after an extensive search involving family members, residents and authorities. The discoveries turned the search into a devastating investigation that shook the local community.

Forensic examinations revealed that Miriam died from severe blood loss caused by injuries to her neck. Investigators also determined that Ariana died by strangulation and had suffered serious head injuries. Authorities reported evidence consistent with sexual assault. The disturbing findings intensified calls for justice for the two victims.

Investigators reportedly identified two suspects, known by the nicknames “El Melo” and “El Cera.” Prosecutors alleged that the killings were motivated by personal revenge and said the men had followed the victims before fleeing. These allegations had not been tested in court.

The case took another shocking turn when a crowd reportedly stormed a police facility and seized the two suspects before they could be transferred to the state capital. One man, identified as Andrés, known as “El Cera,” was killed in the mob attack. The second suspect, Armando, known as “El Melo,” survived after security forces intervened and was taken for medical treatment.

Authorities have opened a separate investigation into the death during the mob violence, while continuing the case involving Ariana and Miriam. Prosecutors have indicated they intend to pursue the maximum penalty against the surviving suspect if the case proceeds and the allegations are proven.

Chiapas Governor Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar condemned the vigilante attack and urged residents to allow the legal system to deliver justice. The tragedy has left the community grieving two lives lost and raised urgent questions about violence against women and girls, public anger, and the dangers of taking justice into one’s own hands.
