Massachusetts Mom Found Shot Dead in Her Kitchen — Then Police Launched a Manhunt for Her 22-Year-Old Son

A quiet suburban neighborhood was shaken by a deadly discovery inside a family home. Within hours, investigators were searching across state lines for the victim’s missing son — until Vermont police spotted his car.

A Massachusetts mother of three was found shot to death inside her own home, setting off an urgent search that ended hours later with the arrest of her 22-year-old son in neighboring Vermont.

Andria Hanafin, 49, was discovered in the kitchen of her home in Reading, Massachusetts, early Thursday, October 8, 2026. Her husband, Matthew Hanafin, reportedly returned from work shortly after midnight, found his wife unresponsive and called 911.

When officers arrived, Andria was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believed she had suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

But as authorities began piecing together what had happened inside the home, one family member was missing — and his absence quickly became a central part of the investigation.

A Missing Son and a Car That Led Investigators Across State Lines

Ryan Hanafin, 22, was not at the family home when police arrived. His black 2010 Dodge Charger was also missing.

Authorities identified him as a person of interest in his mother’s death and began searching for him. Police later received information that he might be heading toward Vermont, where he reportedly had connections.

The search intensified as investigators worked to locate both the young man and his vehicle. Authorities urged the public not to approach him if they spotted him and instead to contact law enforcement.

Then, on Thursday afternoon, Vermont State Police located the Charger on Vermont Route 100 near Sugarbush Access Road in Warren.

Troopers pulled the vehicle over at approximately 2:30 p.m. and took Ryan Hanafin into custody without incident, bringing the hours-long search to an end.

At the time of the reports, he had been detained on a fugitive-from-justice charge and was being held without bail pending an initial court appearance in Vermont. That charge was related to his status as a wanted person, not a conviction for his mother’s killing.

A 13-Year-Old Was Home That Night

Perhaps one of the most troubling details to emerge was that the couple’s youngest child, a 13-year-old boy, was inside the home during the evening before his mother was found dead.

According to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan, the teenager told investigators he last saw his mother alive at around 5 p.m. Wednesday, before leaving to spend time with friends.

When he returned at approximately 9 p.m., he went straight to his bedroom. He did not report seeing his mother again that evening.

The couple’s daughter was away at college when the tragedy unfolded.

The investigation has left the family facing an unimaginable loss, with two children now without their mother and a third family member at the center of a homicide inquiry.

Investigators Point to a Possible Domestic Dispute

Authorities have described the case as an apparent act of domestic violence, although they have not publicly explained the circumstances leading to the shooting.

Officials also said the family had no known history of prior police involvement. Ryan Hanafin legally owned firearms and held a license to carry, which was suspended after the incident.

Investigators had not publicly established a motive, and the weapon believed to have been used in the killing had not been located at the time of the reports.

The questions remain significant: What happened inside the home before Andria Hanafin was killed? Why was her son missing when police arrived? And what, if anything, led to the deadly encounter?

Those answers will depend on the ongoing investigation and evidence gathered by authorities.

Remembered as a Woman Who Always Helped Others

As investigators worked to establish what happened, friends remembered Andria as a loving mother and a generous person who cared deeply about others.

Family friend Heather Gagliardi described her as someone with a “heart of gold,” recalling how she would help people without hesitation and looked for ways to make sure no one went without.

The loss has left friends and loved ones struggling to comprehend how a woman known for her kindness could die so suddenly and violently in her own home.

Ryan Hanafin’s arrest in Vermont marked a major development in the investigation, but it did not resolve the central question of who was responsible for Andria’s death. Authorities continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and he had not been convicted of the killing at the time of publication.

For the Hanafin family and the Reading community, the tragedy has turned an ordinary suburban home into the center of a deeply unsettling case — one that investigators are still working to understand.
