Michigan Man Accused of Killing His Older Brother Out of Jealousy — Then His Sister Came Home Screaming, “What Did You Do?!”
A 21-year-old Michigan man is accused of fatally shooting his own older brother in a killing that police believe may have stemmed from years of jealousy and resentment. The shocking discovery came when their 17-year-old sister returned to the family home, found signs of a shooting, and confronted her brother with a desperate question: “What did you do?!”

Breylon Roberts has been charged with first-degree murder and a firearm-related felony in the death of his 23-year-old brother, Trey Cameron Roberts, according to court records. Investigators say the fatal shooting occurred on October 19 inside the family’s home on Dorset Avenue in Southfield, Michigan. Police believe the brothers had experienced ongoing tension, with relatives and friends describing resentment over Trey’s success at work and the respect he received from people around him.
Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren said investigators learned that jealousy appeared to be a major factor in the conflict. According to the chief, people close to the family described how Trey was doing well professionally and was well-liked by friends and relatives. Investigators believe those circumstances may have fueled his younger brother’s resentment, although the allegations remain part of the ongoing criminal case.
The brothers’ teenage sister came home at around 3 p.m. and reportedly discovered blood and what appeared to be bullet holes inside the residence. She called 911 for help. Responding officers entered the home and found Trey in the kitchen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to local reports, Breylon returned to the home shortly afterward, prompting his sister to repeatedly demand to know what had happened.
Investigators later uncovered evidence that they say helped establish a timeline of the killing. A nearby security camera reportedly captured the sound of 17 gunshots coming from inside the house. About a minute later, footage showed Breylon leaving through the back of the residence with the family dog. Police said witnesses found the behavior unusual, particularly given the timing of the gunfire.
Authorities also recovered 17 spent 9mm shell casings from the kitchen. During a search of a black Jeep Grand Cherokee registered to Breylon, officers reportedly found a handgun with a spent magazine beneath the driver’s seat. Police Chief Barren said ballistic testing linked the weapon to the shooting. Investigators also interviewed relatives and friends as they worked to understand the history of conflict between the brothers.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald described the case as a devastating example of violence within a family, emphasizing that a person’s home should be a place of safety. Breylon Roberts has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bond. He is scheduled to return to court on November 5 for a probable cause conference. The charges against him have not been proven in court, and the case will proceed through the legal system.
