West Virginia Couple Accused of Abusing 3 Orphaned Children, Dumping Dirty Cat Litter in Their Beds and Mocking Them About Their Dead Parents

A West Virginia couple is facing multiple felony charges after investigators say three orphaned children in their care endured years of disturbing physical and emotional abuse. Authorities allege the children were repeatedly beaten, deprived of basic necessities, and punished in degrading ways — including having dirty cat litter dumped into their beds and being forced to run barefoot across a gravel driveway.

Erica Lynn Sayre, 45, and her husband, Clifford Gale Sayre, 46, of Evans, West Virginia, were charged following an investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. The three children, ranging in age from 12 to 17, had reportedly been living with the couple for several years after their biological parents died. According to investigators, the children were also tormented about the loss of their parents, adding emotional distress to the alleged mistreatment they experienced at home.

In a statement, the sheriff’s department described allegations of repeated physical abuse, including being struck and strangled, deprived of food and water, and denied access to the bathroom. Investigators also said the children reported having soiled cat litter dumped in their beds and dog feces placed on their personal belongings. Other alleged punishments included having dirty socks forced into their mouths and having their hair forcibly cut.

One child reportedly told investigators that she had been struck in the head with an electronic device, leaving a bleeding injury for which she was allegedly denied medical treatment. Another child was allegedly threatened with death if they contacted Child Protective Services. During a forensic interview, one of the children became visibly emotional and said, “I can’t go back to that home,” according to the sheriff’s department.

Authorities allege that Erica carried out repeated acts of abuse, while Clifford witnessed the mistreatment and failed to intervene. Investigators also said he allegedly helped restrain one child while Erica cut the child’s hair with a razor blade, causing an injury. One child reportedly summarized the situation by telling investigators, “Because mom hits us and Gale lets her.”

Investigators said the children’s accounts were consistent with one another and that officials documented scars they believed were consistent with portions of their allegations. The children were removed from the residence after authorities became involved. Jackson County Sheriff R.H. Mellinger described the case as deeply troubling, saying the adults who should have protected the children were instead accused of creating an environment of fear and mistreatment.

Erica Sayre faces three counts of child abuse resulting in bodily injury and three counts of child neglect creating a risk of injury. Clifford Sayre faces three counts of child neglect resulting in bodily injury and three counts of child neglect creating a risk of injury. The charges remain allegations, and both defendants are entitled to due process as the case moves through court. For the three children, authorities say the investigation has brought an end to the alleged conditions they had endured for years.
