Mom and Three Children Burn to Death in Fiery Head-On Crash After Pickup Driver Allegedly Falls Asleep at the Wheel
A family of five was wiped out in a devastating head-on collision in Colorado after a pickup truck allegedly veered into oncoming traffic and slammed into their SUV, causing both vehicles to burst into flames. The mother and her three young children were unable to escape the burning vehicle, while witnesses reportedly struggled to reach them as the fire spread.

More than a year after the horrific crash, the pickup driver, identified as 26-year-old Samuel Conger, is now facing five counts of criminally negligent homicide in connection with the deaths of the family.
The victims were identified as Manuel Cabral-Torres, 34, his wife, Andrea Banuelos-Salazar, 30, and their children: Maria Cabral-Banuelos, 12, Manuel Cabral-Banuelos, 5, and Andres Cabral-Banuelos, 2.
The tragedy occurred on August 4, 2025, on Highway 9 south of Kremmling, Colorado. Details contained in an arrest affidavit have now shed new light on the moments leading up to the fatal collision and the desperate efforts to rescue the family.
Driver Allegedly Appeared to Be Asleep Behind the Wheel
According to the arrest affidavit, Conger was driving a Ford F-150 northbound when his truck began drifting into the opposite lane of traffic.
A witness reportedly saw the pickup moving toward oncoming vehicles and was forced to swerve to avoid being hit. Looking back through his rearview mirror, the witness allegedly watched as the truck continued into the southbound lane and collided head-on with the family’s maroon GMC Yukon.
The witness told investigators that Conger’s head appeared to be down, making him look as though he was “asleep or passed out” behind the wheel.
Other witnesses reportedly described similar movements by the pickup before the collision.
Investigators later reconstructed the crash using witness accounts, photographs, drone imagery and an analysis of the vehicles’ movements. Their calculations estimated that the Ford was traveling between 78 and 86 mph in a posted 65 mph zone when the vehicles collided.
According to the affidavit, the pickup had traveled in the oncoming lane for hundreds of feet before impact. Investigators found no evidence indicating that the driver attempted to brake or make an evasive maneuver to avoid the crash.
The affidavit described the alleged driving as a gross deviation from the standard of care expected of a reasonable person.
Both Vehicles Burst Into Flames
The force of the collision caused both vehicles to spin around before catching fire, turning the highway into a terrifying scene of flames and wreckage.
Witnesses rushed to help the occupants of both vehicles. However, the fire rapidly engulfed the Yukon, preventing rescuers from reaching the family inside.
According to the arrest affidavit, police managed to pull Manuel Cabral-Torres from the vehicle, but the remaining occupants could not be extricated because the flames had fully engulfed the SUV.
The mother and three children died at the scene.
Conger, meanwhile, was able to escape from his pickup with assistance from bystanders. He suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Kremmling McElroy Airport before being flown to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood for further treatment.
The contrast between the desperate rescue attempts and the devastating outcome for the family has made the case especially painful for those who witnessed the collision.
A Family of Five Lost in Seconds
Manuel and Andrea had been raising their three children in the Kremmling area. Their deaths left relatives and loved ones grieving the loss of an entire young family.
Maria, 12, was the eldest child. Her younger brothers, Manuel, 5, and Andres, just 2 years old, were also killed alongside their parents.
The tragedy shocked the local community, where residents and school officials mourned the five victims. A fundraising campaign was established by relatives and supporters to help the family’s loved ones with funeral expenses and other costs following the devastating loss.
For those left behind, the crash meant losing not just one loved one, but a mother, a father and three children in a single incident.
The investigation took months as authorities worked to reconstruct the collision and establish whether criminal charges were warranted. Investigators also attempted to examine electronic data recorders from both vehicles, but the fire damage was too extensive to recover usable information.
Charges Filed More Than a Year After the Crash
The case remained under investigation for months following the August 2025 collision. Colorado State Patrol investigators submitted their findings to prosecutors in July 2026, and Conger was subsequently charged with five counts of criminally negligent homicide.
The charges relate to the deaths of each of the five family members.
Criminally negligent homicide generally involves causing another person’s death through conduct that falls substantially below the level of care a reasonable person would exercise. Prosecutors will need to establish the required elements of the offenses as the case moves through court.
Earlier reporting in September 2026 indicated that authorities were still reviewing the evidence before making a charging decision. The subsequent charges represent a significant development in the investigation.
Conger has been accused of criminal wrongdoing, but the charges remain allegations and must be proven in court.
A Tragedy That Continues to Haunt Loved Ones
The devastating collision has raised serious questions about the dangers of driving while dangerously fatigued or otherwise unable to remain alert behind the wheel. Investigators allege that the pickup crossed into the opposing lane without braking before striking the family’s SUV.
The exact circumstances behind the driver’s apparent condition remain part of the legal case, and the allegation that he appeared asleep or passed out comes from witness accounts documented in the affidavit.
For the family’s surviving relatives, however, the legal proceedings cannot undo what happened on that stretch of highway.
Manuel Cabral-Torres, Andrea Banuelos-Salazar and their three children were killed in a crash that left witnesses unable to rescue everyone from the burning SUV. Their deaths have left an immeasurable void in the lives of those who loved them.
As the criminal case proceeds, the family’s loved ones continue to seek answers and accountability for the loss of five lives in a single, devastating collision.
