Mother, 15-Year-Old Son and Grandmother Identified in Oregon Triple Homicide
HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON — A mother, her teenage son and her elderly mother were found shot to death inside their Oregon home in a case authorities are investigating as a triple homicide. The woman’s boyfriend, identified as 45-year-old Edward Villa, was later found dead at a coastal Oregon motel after authorities tracked him down.

The victims were identified as 47-year-old Katie Lynn Kinder, her 15-year-old son, Evan Scott Kinder, and her 78-year-old mother, Patricia Lynn Campbell, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators believe Villa killed the three family members before taking his own life. Authorities have not publicly established a motive, and the circumstances leading up to the killings remain under investigation.
Family Members Discovered Inside Their Home
The investigation began after concerns arose when Katie Kinder failed to show up for work on Monday, October 19, 2026.
According to investigators, her employer contacted authorities after she did not arrive as expected. When she also failed to appear the following day, coworkers went to her home in Happy Valley, a community near Portland.
They eventually contacted police, who entered the residence and discovered the three victims.
The medical examiner later determined that all three had died from gunshot wounds, and their deaths were classified as homicides.
The discovery prompted a search for Villa, who investigators believed was connected to the killings.
Suspect Tracked to Oregon Coast Motel
Detectives developed information indicating that Villa may have traveled toward the Oregon coast.
On Wednesday, October 21, law enforcement officers located him at the South Jetty Inn in Hammond, Oregon, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and other agencies.
According to authorities, officers surrounded the motel and attempted to get Villa to surrender. During the operation, members of the U.S. Marshals task force heard what they believed was a single gunshot coming from his room.
Villa was subsequently found dead. Authorities said he died by suicide before officers could take him into custody.
Investigators had obtained an arrest warrant charging him with three counts of first-degree murder.
His death means he will not face trial over the killings. Police have not publicly disclosed what may have led to the fatal incident.
Teenage Victim Was a High School Student
Evan Kinder, 15, was a 10th-grade student at New Urban Online, the North Clackamas School District confirmed.
The district expressed sorrow over the tragedy and emphasized that students and families should be able to live free from violence and abuse, both at home and in their communities.
The deaths of three members of the same family have left relatives and loved ones grieving an enormous loss.
In a statement shared by law enforcement, the victims’ family described the killings as a devastating tragedy that had changed their lives forever.
“Our family is living through a nightmare that no family should ever have to experience,” the statement said.
The relatives emphasized that the victims were much more than names in a criminal investigation, describing them as irreplaceable members of their family.
Authorities Address Domestic Violence Concerns
Clackamas County Sheriff James Rhodes acknowledged the tragedy and condemned violence within families and communities.
“Domestic violence and violent crime has no place in Clackamas County,” Rhodes said.
Investigators have not released details establishing what happened immediately before the shootings. Authorities also have not publicly confirmed a motive.
While the case has raised concerns about domestic violence, officials have urged the public to avoid drawing conclusions beyond the evidence released by investigators.
The deaths of Katie Kinder, her son and her mother have underscored the devastating consequences that violence can have on entire families.
Investigation Leaves Family Seeking Answers
Although authorities located the suspected perpetrator within days of discovering the bodies, important questions about the killings remain unanswered.
Investigators have not publicly explained what triggered the violence or provided a detailed account of the events inside the home.
For the victims’ relatives, the loss is threefold: a mother, a teenage boy and a grandmother who were part of the same family have all died.
Their statement reflected the depth of their grief and the lasting absence left by the tragedy.
As investigators continue documenting the circumstances surrounding the case, the victims’ family is left to mourn three loved ones whose lives ended in a single, devastating incident.
