A dispute over loud music at an Albuquerque apartment complex ended in tragedy when 16-year-old Keinerlein Rangel was fatally shot by a 10-year-old boy, according to police. The incident happened on October 31, 2026, after an argument broke out between the boy’s mother, 40-year-old Elaina Gomez-Villeda, and Keinerlein’s mother, Susana Rangel. What began as a disagreement between neighbors reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation outside their apartments. Authorities say Keinerlein stepped in during the altercation, but the situation quickly became far more dangerous when a firearm was brought into the dispute.

According to the criminal complaint, Susana and her daughter had been listening to music when Gomez-Villeda approached their apartment and complained about the volume. A short time later, while the mother and daughter were installing a security camera outside, Gomez-Villeda allegedly confronted them and began hitting them. Keinerlein attempted to intervene, and Gomez-Villeda’s 10-year-old son also became involved. Investigators allege that instead of removing the child from the confrontation, Gomez-Villeda instructed him to go inside their apartment and retrieve her handgun. The boy returned with the weapon and fired a single shot, striking Keinerlein in the head. The teenager died from her injuries.

After the shooting, Gomez-Villeda allegedly took her son back inside the apartment and closed the door. Investigators say she later sent her husband a text message stating, “I’m probably going to jail right now,” before calling 911. During the emergency call, she reportedly said she had been attacked by her neighbors and that one of the people involved had been shot. The situation remained volatile when Keinerlein’s father arrived and attempted to open the apartment door, reportedly breaking a window. Gomez-Villeda later told detectives that she fired a gun toward him because she wanted him to leave. She also claimed she feared that she and her family were in danger.

When Albuquerque police officers arrived shortly after 4 p.m., they reportedly heard or saw gunfire coming from inside the apartment and took cover. Several people eventually came outside, followed by Gomez-Villeda, who was allegedly carrying a handgun. An officer fired toward her, but the bullets struck a building pillar rather than hitting her. She later surrendered. Investigators also reported that the firearm believed to have been used in Keinerlein’s killing had been stolen from Santa Fe. Authorities are separately investigating the officer-involved shooting that occurred during the response.

Gomez-Villeda was arrested and charged with an open count of murder, along with additional offenses that include child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, negligently making a firearm accessible to a minor, battery and receiving stolen property related to the firearm. Police have also reported a conspiracy-related charge. She is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque. Her 10-year-old son has not been publicly identified or charged at this stage. Detectives are consulting with prosecutors and state officials to determine whether any legal action is appropriate given his age. The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against Gomez-Villeda have not yet been proven in court.

For Keinerlein’s family, the loss is devastating. A disagreement that could have ended with a simple conversation instead left a teenage girl dead and a young child at the center of a homicide investigation. The case has also raised serious questions about children’s access to firearms and the responsibility of adults to keep weapons away from them, particularly during heated confrontations. Police continue to investigate the events leading up to the shooting, while Keinerlein’s loved ones face the painful reality of losing a daughter in circumstances that began with an ordinary neighborhood dispute.
