Mother Sentenced to Life in Prison After 3-Year-Old Son Dies Following Months of Abuse
A Colorado mother will spend the rest of her life behind bars after being convicted of first-degree murder in the death of her 3-year-old son, following what prosecutors described as months of physical abuse inflicted on two young boys. Samantha Kimberly, 40, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on November 4, 2026, after a jury found her guilty of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse. The case came to light in June 2024, when emergency responders were called to a home in Pueblo West, Colorado, after receiving a report that a young child was unconscious and breathing abnormally.

When deputies arrived on June 8, 2024, they found the 3-year-old with visible injuries and in critical condition. He was taken to a local hospital before being flown to a hospital in Colorado Springs for further treatment. Despite medical efforts, the boy died on June 13 from injuries prosecutors later described as a severe brain injury. Investigators also discovered that the child’s 14-year-old brother had visible injuries. The teenager was taken to a hospital and later placed under the protection of the Department of Human Services.
During the three-week trial, prosecutors presented evidence that both children had endured months of physical abuse. The case also involved Brittany Farmer, a woman who had been living with or spending time with the family. Prosecutors said Kimberly and Farmer participated in repeated beatings, with the alleged abuse involving increasingly severe methods. Testimony described how the boys were made to walk around the living room for extended periods with little water and limited breaks. The older child reportedly suffered extensive bruising, while the younger boy sustained injuries across much of his body.
Prosecutors also presented messages exchanged between Kimberly and Farmer before the toddler’s death. According to courtroom reporting, some messages showed the women discussing the children’s punishment and expressing concern about the possibility of causing serious harm. On the day the child was found unresponsive, Kimberly reportedly told emergency dispatchers that he had fallen down the stairs. Prosecutors later argued that the injuries and other evidence contradicted that explanation. During questioning, Kimberly made statements acknowledging that she had lost control and that she had hurt her son. The defense, however, argued that Farmer was primarily responsible for the fatal head injury, pointing to evidence and testimony about Farmer’s actions.
Farmer had already been sentenced to 45 years in prison in December 2025 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse-related charges. Kimberly’s conviction and life sentence bring another major development in a case that began with the discovery of two injured children and ultimately exposed a prolonged pattern of abuse. The surviving older boy was removed from the home and placed in protective care. Authorities have described the case as especially difficult because both victims were children who depended on the adults around them for safety.
