Arizona Father Accused of Beating 7-Year-Old Son Over Backward Shirt — Then Hugged Him and Sent Him to School
A 24-year-old Arizona father is facing child abuse and aggravated assault charges after allegedly striking his 7-year-old son over a disagreement about how the boy was wearing his shirt. Martin Vaughn II was arrested on October 30, 2026, after school staff noticed red marks across the child’s face and contacted authorities. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, the boy arrived at elementary school with injuries extending from beneath his left eye toward his jawline, ear and temple. When staff asked what had happened, the child reportedly said, “My dad keeps smacking me, don’t call DCS.”

Investigators said the incident began early that morning when Vaughn woke his son at approximately 5:30 a.m. to get ready for the day. Vaughn reportedly told police that he noticed the boy’s shirt might be on backward and asked him to check for the clothing tag. When the child looked down, his father allegedly became frustrated because he believed the boy was not making enough effort to correct the problem. During an interview with investigators, Vaughn reportedly admitted that he lost control of his anger and began yelling. The child, however, gave investigators a more troubling account: he said his father became upset after he explained that the shirt was not backward, then smacked him on the ear and cheek. He reportedly cried afterward in what he called his “safe spot.”
According to the affidavit, what happened next was particularly concerning. Vaughn allegedly gave his son a hug and a kiss before sending him off to school. He also reportedly told his wife that a school bus seat belt had struck the boy in the face and caused the visible mark. But the child’s account to investigators contradicted that explanation. Authorities said the boy’s injuries resembled a handprint, and school personnel had already raised concerns after seeing the marks on his face.
The investigation also uncovered previous allegations involving the father and his son. According to police records, multiple Department of Child Safety cases had reportedly involved injuries to the child, with Vaughn identified as a suspect. One earlier investigation allegedly concerned an incident in which the father punched the boy, while another involved claims that he had whipped and starved him. The child also reportedly told investigators that his father had previously hit him with a belt and an object he described as a spring, comparing it to an extension cord. In another disturbing allegation, when the boy was only 6 months old and in his father’s care, he reportedly suffered a skull fracture, traumatic brain injury and broken bones in both arms and legs.
Authorities also reviewed a separate incident from late September, when the child allegedly arrived at his mother’s home with a black eye. The boy reportedly said his father had punched him, while Vaughn claimed the injury happened when the child struck a counter. Investigators further noted that the boy has developmental delays and cognitive abilities comparable to those of a 5-year-old. During the latest investigation, the child reportedly told authorities he was afraid to return to his father and worried about what might happen to him for telling the truth. Vaughn was arrested and faces child abuse and aggravated assault charges. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations have not yet been established through a criminal conviction.
