Nursing Home Caregiver Records 71-Second Video as 92-Year-Old Husband Allegedly Tries to Suffocate His Wife
A disturbing incident inside a Kentucky retirement community has led to criminal charges against two men. Police say a 92-year-old husband allegedly tried to suffocate his elderly wife with a plastic bag, while the caregiver assigned to protect her reportedly pulled out his phone and recorded the attack instead of intervening.

The incident unfolded shortly after midnight on October 28, 2026, at StoryPoint Brownsboro, a senior living community on Overlook Drive in Louisville, Kentucky. Police were called to investigate a reported domestic violence incident after staff members intervened in an assault involving an elderly female resident. According to investigators, 92-year-old Bert Morris allegedly placed a plastic bag over his wife’s face and pinched her nose, causing the bag to seal around her mouth and tighten around her head. Emergency responders transported the woman to a nearby hospital, where she was reportedly unconscious following the incident.
What made the case even more disturbing was the alleged conduct of the woman’s designated caregiver, 41-year-old Terrence Gabie. According to court documents, Gabie witnessed the assault but did not immediately help the woman. Instead, investigators say he took out his cellphone and recorded a 71-second video of what was happening. The footage later became an important piece of evidence in the investigation. Authorities allege that Gabie knew the woman was in danger but failed to provide assistance. Another nurse eventually stepped in and separated Morris from his wife, bringing the assault to an end.
Police also reported a troubling statement allegedly made by Morris when investigators questioned him. According to the arrest documents, he told officers that his wife “needed to die.” He was arrested and charged with attempted murder related to domestic violence and first-degree strangulation. Gabie was separately arrested and charged with knowingly abusing or neglecting an adult. The charges against the caregiver reflect the allegation that he failed to protect a vulnerable resident who was under his care, rather than the allegation that he personally carried out the attack.
Both men appeared in court and pleaded not guilty. Morris initially faced a $250,000 bond, which was later reduced to $150,000. Gabie’s bond was set at $10,000, and he was released on his own recognizance. Their preliminary hearings were scheduled for November 6, 2026. Meanwhile, the woman’s condition remained unclear in the latest reports, leaving her family and the community waiting for further information about her recovery.
The retirement community, StoryPoint Brownsboro, said it was cooperating fully with law enforcement. In a statement, the facility emphasized that the safety and well-being of its residents remained its highest priority. The case has raised serious questions about the responsibility of caregivers when a vulnerable person faces immediate danger. For the elderly woman at the center of the investigation, the most important question remains whether she will recover from the alleged attack. For investigators, the 71-second recording may help establish exactly what happened and what the caregiver did—or failed to do—while she was in danger.
