Pennsylvania Father Kills His Two Young Children Before Jumping from Parking Garage — Wife Says He Had Been Struggling After Losing His Job

A Pennsylvania community is mourning the deaths of two young siblings and their father after a devastating incident that police are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide. Patrick Lynch, 42, and his children, James, 8, and Caroline, 6, were found with fatal injuries near a five-story parking garage in Mt. Lebanon, a suburb of Pittsburgh, on November 3, 2026. Authorities said the three were discovered shortly after 4 p.m. near the township’s municipal building. Emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to reports cited by PEOPLE, investigators believe Patrick threw his two children from the parking garage before jumping himself. Police initially described the incident as an apparent fall, but later emphasized that it was not being treated as an accident. The Allegheny County Police Department said preliminary information pointed to a murder-suicide. The medical examiner determined that both children died from multiple blunt-force injuries, and their deaths were ruled homicides. Authorities have not publicly released a detailed account of what happened immediately before the children fell.

In the aftermath, the children’s mother, Anna DeMase Lynch, shared a heartbreaking message about her family. She said Patrick had been laid off from his data-science job in August and became depressed shortly afterward. Anna described him as a “wonderful dad” and explained that she had encouraged him to seek professional help. He had reportedly agreed to attend therapy, with his first appointment scheduled for November 4 — just one day after the tragedy. Reflecting on the devastating timing, she wrote, “One day too late.” She also urged others to check in on loved ones who may be struggling, reminding people that emotional distress can sometimes remain hidden from those around them.

James and Caroline were remembered as children who shared a close bond. Friends and members of the community described Caroline as joyful, outgoing and full of energy. She had Williams syndrome, a rare genetic condition, and her family had been connected with organizations supporting people with the condition. The Williams Syndrome Foundation expressed its condolences to Anna and everyone affected by the loss. The children’s school district also released a statement of sympathy, while two elementary schools temporarily closed following the deaths. Counseling support was made available to students and staff as the community tried to process what had happened.

For Anna, the loss is almost impossible to put into words: she is grieving both of her children and her husband, while facing the difficult task of laying her family to rest. A fundraiser was established by family friends to help with funeral expenses and provide support during this unimaginable period. Police have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths, while authorities have not publicly confirmed a specific motive. The tragedy has left neighbors, friends and classmates searching for answers — and serves as a painful reminder of how deeply a family crisis can affect everyone involved.
