“She Was Begging for Help”: Newly Released School Footage Renews Questions After 8-Year-Old Adrian Thompson’s Tragic Death

Six months after losing their 8-year-old daughter, Anna and Greg Thompson are still searching for answers about the moments that led to her death inside a Texas elementary school. Their daughter, Adrian Sue Thompson, died after choking during lunchtime at Velma Penny Elementary School in Lindale on April 16, 2026. Now, newly released surveillance footage has brought renewed attention to the tragedy, showing the little girl moving through the cafeteria and approaching an adult while struggling to breathe. Her parents say the video raises painful questions about how quickly her emergency was recognized and addressed.

Seeking Justice for Adrian: Shocking Security Footage Triggers New Inquiry

The incident began around 11:40 a.m. on April 15, when Adrian was eating lunch with other students. According to reports describing the footage and investigative records, she began coughing and appeared to struggle with something lodged in her throat. Holding a napkin near her mouth, she approached a school employee and tried to get attention. The employee reportedly believed the child might be feeling sick and directed her toward a trash can before asking whether she wanted to use the restroom. Adrian returned to the cafeteria just seconds later, still visibly distressed, and again approached the same adult. She eventually ran through the school corridors toward the nurse’s office.

According to the Texas Rangers’ investigative report, Adrian reached the nurse and pointed toward her mouth while trying to communicate. Her condition rapidly worsened, and she reportedly began turning blue. The nurse attempted the Heimlich maneuver, but Adrian collapsed. The nurse then checked for a pulse, began CPR and used a LifeVac airway-clearance device. The school principal called 911 at approximately 11:45 a.m. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward and continued lifesaving efforts before transporting Adrian to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. Despite those efforts, she died during the early hours of April 16.

For Anna Thompson, the footage has made an already unbearable loss even harder to process. She has questioned whether the emergency response began quickly enough and whether important details were fully examined during the investigation. In interviews with local media, she said the family was left with unanswered questions and expressed concern that investigators did not interview witnesses. Her decision to share the footage is intended to bring public attention to the circumstances surrounding Adrian’s final moments and encourage greater accountability in school emergency procedures.

The official findings, however, are important to distinguish from the family’s concerns. The Texas Rangers investigated the incident and concluded that no criminal offense had occurred. No criminal charges were filed, and the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Adrian died accidentally from choking. The findings do not establish that school employees committed a crime. At the same time, the family continues to seek clarity about the response and believes more should be done to ensure that children in similar emergencies receive immediate help.

Following Adrian’s death, Lindale Independent School District said it would seek an independent review of its safety equipment and emergency-response procedures, while also strengthening staff training. Later reports indicated that the district had updated procedures and provided additional training. But for Adrian’s parents, policy changes cannot replace the daughter they lost. They have preserved her bedroom at home, keeping her belongings just as she left them. They remember a little girl who loved school, her teachers and friends, and who brought joy to her family. Their hope is that by continuing to speak about Adrian, her story will lead to better emergency preparedness and help protect other children.
