Teen Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison After 9-Year-Old Girl Is Killed in Shooting Linked to Facebook Feud

A 9-year-old girl playing outside with her brother and friends was fatally shot in front of her mother after a dispute that began on Facebook escalated into gunfire. More than four years later, the man responsible has been sentenced to 18 years in prison, bringing a major development in a case that devastated a New Jersey family.

Isiah M. Roberts was 19 when the deadly shooting occurred in March 2022 in the courtyard of an apartment complex in Trenton, New Jersey. On Friday, October 23, 2026, Roberts, now 23, received an 18-year prison sentence for the death of Sequoya Bacon-Jones, a fourth-grade student who was caught in the crossfire of a confrontation she had nothing to do with.

According to court proceedings reported by Law&Crime and NJ.com, the incident stemmed from an online dispute involving Roberts’ family. His mother and sister reportedly contacted him after a physical confrontation connected to the Facebook feud. Roberts was told to go to the Kingsbury apartment complex, where the conflict had moved from social media into the real world.

When Roberts arrived, he was reportedly told the identity of a man considered a rival by his family. His attorney said Roberts retrieved a 9 mm handgun from an apartment and went outside, where he encountered the intended target. Believing the other man might also be armed, Roberts opened fire. As people scattered to escape the gunshots, Sequoya was struck while trying to run for safety with her brother.

Sequoya’s mother, Sacha Bacon-Jones, was nearby when the shooting erupted. She rushed toward her daughter after realizing she had been hit. In a previous interview, she recalled finding the little girl badly wounded and struggling to comprehend what was happening. Emergency responders took Sequoya to a hospital, where she later died.

The shooting was not believed to have been intended to target Sequoya. Roberts’ attorney acknowledged in court that his client had acted with reckless disregard for human life, even though he did not intend to kill the child. In April 2026, Roberts pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter under a plea agreement that called for a prison term of between 15 and 18 years.

At sentencing, Sequoya’s mother delivered a message that reflected both her grief and her struggle to move forward. She said she had chosen to forgive Roberts, explaining that she did not want to continue carrying hatred. Her words came after years of living with the loss of a daughter whose life had barely begun.

The judge criticized Roberts’ decision to introduce a firearm into a situation that had started as a dispute, noting that his actions unnecessarily escalated the confrontation. The 18-year sentence means Roberts will spend years in prison for the shooting that killed Sequoya, whose death has remained a painful reminder of the consequences of turning online arguments into real-world violence.

For Sequoya’s family, the sentence marks an important step in the legal process, but it cannot undo the loss of their child. The case underscores how a feud on social media can spill into a physical confrontation and endanger people who have no part in the original dispute.
